Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How did you wean? Repost from breastfeeding...

DS will be 11 months on the 27th and I would like to wean him off of the breast by the 2nd week in January because DH and I are going to Vegas on the 20th of January for 4 days. This will also be his first time away from us at night. I figured since its so close to his one yr mark I can give the milk from my stash while Im away. How did you wea?. He currently eats mixture of puree and tablefood twice a day (breakfast and dinner), may add lunch soon, and breast feeds 3-4 times a day (early morn, mid day (if not distracted), evening, and bedtime. How much milk should he be actually getting and when once I wean? How should I wean? and what am I giving after I wean? Sorry, this started out as a one question post and turned into a book.

  • I weaned DD at 8 1/2 months and went to formula so I'm not sure about your ?'s for milk, but I'll tell you how the weaning from the boob part went... I tried just bfing her in the morning and at night, but after 2 days realized that wasn't working. She would get so worked up when I'd try to feed her a bottle (she'd take it from other people, but not me and my dh was out of town at the time) and just kept going for my boob. I had to just quit bfing all together, which I was a little sad about at first but after 1 day she didn't mind the bottle. Just be consistent with whatever you do! Good luck and I hope you'll get some better answers from others! :)

  • Do you have him used to a sippy cup yet?  We started by giving a sippy of pumped BM, water, or juice during meals (he wouldn't nurse after eating).  Last week I started him on milk with breakfast, this week I added a sippy of milk between breakfast and lunch instead of nursing.  I'm going to replace a nursing session each week with milk.  Pedi said over all he should get 16oz a day of milk.  I still nurse at bedtime and once at night, so not sure how I'll get rid of that anytime soon!

  • I'm starting the weaning process now - I have a huge freezer stash, so I'm just cutting out one feeding a week and replacing it with pumped milk. I'm going to try milk in the sippy cup first (we'll see how that goes - she's only had water in it as of now) and if that doesn't work, I'll just do the bottle. I'll probably continue with nursing 1x for a few weeks before cutting that out - my biggest fear is engorgement - I have an oversupply and already get engorged fairly frequently still so I want to take it slow so I'm not in too much pain.
