Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I dont understand why highchairs recline?

Re: I dont understand why highchairs recline?

  • Not really sure of the actual point, but my friend always puts her DD (who is now 18 months) in her highchair and reclines it to get her to take medicine. Made me laugh the first time I saw it, but it worked!!! She couldn't squirm away or get out, so she had to cooperate. lol. That almost makes it sound like a torture device.

  • At the risk of being flamed, it's how people get their LOs to eat solids when they aren't neccessarily ready to eat them. It's a whole lot easier to shovel cereal and purees down a throat that's reclined...

  • I think it's so you can sit a younger baby in it before they support their head well. At that point it's obviously not meant for them to eat in, but another spot to sit during the day or while mom and dad are eating.

  • We aren't feeding solids, but we are using our highchair.  It is a great (read: safe) place to put LO where he can see us at eye level, play with toys on his tray and stay out of harms way.   So for us, a highchair is a great alternative to his swing/bouncy/bumbo.  He could probably sit up for a little while in his seat, but the recline makes him more comfortable.

I disagree. Too many moms use this as an excuse to feed their LOs solids.  Choke it down!

  • i've used it as a place for her to sit while i'm in the kitchen doing dishes or when we(hubby and I)are eating. She can sit on her own, but seems more comfy leaning back just a little when we are not feeding her solids.  i started using it when she hated laying back in her bouncy at around 3 months.  and for what its worth we didn't start solids until 5.5 months and only then because I wanted to have a week or two under our belt at our next well baby visit.  She was more than ready when we started them  :)
  • Marissa sits in hers while we are eating dinner.  She can't quite support herself yet so it's nice that it reclines.  We like her sitting at the table with us, instead of in another room.  We hope that this will help her get used to the table setting, we talk to her and she smiles and plays while we eat.  She will not be starting solids until 6 months.

  • Mine has multiple settings.  DS can hold himself up fine on the upright setting, but since he's little the tray is almost in his face and he just leans forward and tries to chew on the tray.  If I put it one click back he stays put and lets me feed him.  Mine lays down almost flat too though...I really don't see the point in that.

  • We've used ours practically from birth... sicne she was just a few weeks old, reclined, so we could have her at the table with us while we ate. We don't recline all the way back anymore unless she's asleep though.

We have a space saver and it also goes with us when we eat out. She is ok sitting all the way up but seems a bit more comfortable at a slight recline right now

  • We started putting DD in it when she was about a month old. I'd sit her in it reclined while I did dishes and I'd talk to her and sing songs to her. It was the only way dishes ever got done in before 5 for a couple of weeks there.
  • DS sits in his highchair every day, and has pretty much his entire life.  That's where he sits when we're cooking or eating or cleaning the kitchen.  He loves it!  He still hasn't started solids but high chairs don't have to be just for feeding.

Yeah, that's what it's for to make your child choke down food Confused

Anyway, my LO can hold her bottle, so after she has her cereal, I recline so she can have her bottle. Besides, she sits up to eat her food.

  • The real answer is....food comas!!!  Seriously, wait until they start really eating food themselves in the high chair.  They all pass out halfway through!  Some of my best pictures are ds passed out with spaghetti all over his face.  It's hysterical.  There is something about solid food that makes babies fall asleep!  I'm so glad that they make them recline so I didn't have to move my son.

  • mine has multiple positions. i used it from almost 4 weeks on so that if i was doing stuff in the kitchen i could put the babies in their chairs.

now both my babies have excellent head control and do the whole tripod sit thing but are more comfortable eating at a little bit of a recline vs. sitting upright.

  • I was thinking of getting one because my son's legs are too fat for the bumbo and I think he'd be happier if he didn't have the blinders of the rock and play. But I don't have a lot of space so I am waiting until he eats or until I get a BRU gift certificate for Christmas :P. He'll be 5 months around then.

  • Yeah, my LO sits up straight for solids, but the reclining position is great for the bottle. It's hard for him to sit up straight and drink from it.
