2nd Trimester

I feel kinda bad (Not so dramatic after all)

I took a bath last night in our big garden tub and I was FREEZING before I got in. When I do take baths, I try to take warm/very warm (but not hot) baths because of obvious precautions against it.

I was lying in the bath for about 20 minutes before DH got home from work. Whenever I'm in the bath, he always dips his hand in to make sure I'm not cooking baby Stick out tongue. He put his hand in last night and said that it was way too hot and begged me to drain some of the water and add cooler water or just to get out of the tub. I was really surprised because it honestly just felt warm to me, but I think I might have been really, really cold before I got in and didn't notice how hot the water was. (Maybe?)

When I got out, my whole body was red (telling me that I was probably taking a hotter bath than I thought I was). I feel so terrible and I hope I didn't cause any serious problems. Since I apparently have no idea how to safely take a bath in the winter, this momma will probably only take showers until my nerve-endings come back in the spring.

Is anyone taking hot baths? He seems to be a bit less active today than he has been the last few days, but it may be an overreaction.

Edit: For phrasing.

  • I took a hot bath one morning, and I was red also.  But, I didn't cook my baby.  Chances are your body would have come up with a way to let you know you were in danger-- sweating, hyper- ventilating, vomiting, etc.  Also, the temperature in a bath slowly cools down, unlike a hot tub/ jacuzzi.

But, I know what you're going through because I freaked out too and haven't had a bath since.  I am sooooo looking forward to one after the baby comes.  I love reading in the bathtub with a glass of wine (although with a newborn on the way I can probably kiss that idea goodbye)!

Ugh. I take hot baths, and no, I've never cooked my baby. What kind of thing is that to ask?

Alright, this is reassuring. Thank you. Smile

I love reading with a glass of wine in the bath too...But yes, that past-time when out the window back in August. Big Smile I so look forward to taking baths at the end of a long work day, especially when I'm starting to get little aches here and there.

  • There is nothing you can do it about it now and you are probably overreacting.  In the future try and make sure the water isn't as warm.

Yeah, I don't know why my perception about the temperature was so off last night.. I'll probably just stick to showers going forward.

ME TOO. Almost every night! I just make sure I am not sweating - how can it be safe to work out and sweat, but not take a dang bath.....baby won't cook and mommy needs to RELAX damn it!

  • If you were really cold, the water would've felt hotter to you, not colder. So there goes the "perception" theory.

I think you and DH are both overreacting, I'm sure you didn't hard boil your baby.

Haha! Big Smile Well I think that the difference between working out and sweating and sitting in a too hot bath is that working out and sweating isn't going to heat your internal tissues past a safe point, while sitting in a bath of molten lava (read: the bath I took last night) probably will.

Well, not to get into too many boring details, but I put my feet in the bath when I was filling it up initially and it was absolutely scalding (and yes, it felt very, very hot to me since I was freezing) and then I let the rest of it fill up but turned down the hot water a bit and then when I felt I'd adjusted, I got comfortable in it.

This probably doesn't make any sense, but it does in my head. Ah well...

  • My doctor told me baths are o.k. but it's more jacuzzi water which is much hotter and at a constant temperature that I should avoid.

    This makes sense. Thank you!

  • DS was born in August and I was soo hot I convinced myself that he was boiling in his own amniotic fluid, he wasn't of course.  DH was nice enough to remind me that people have babies in much warmer climates than ours.

My point is really that if people don't boil their babies when living in the jungle climate all the time, your bath was just fine.

  • I for sure boiled my DS! He's now a healthy happy 2.5 year old. My dr was encouraging of baths because of the benefits of what it does to your body and all the aches in pains.

    He looks pretty happy. Smile

  • I asked my dr about hot baths because I like mine hotter than warm. She said hot baths were not a problem as long as I drink cold water while I'm in the tub to regulate my internal body temperature.

  • My MW actually said not to worry about hot baths, since the water cools down too fast to be trouble.
  • Hot showers and baths are my one vice. Sorry baby, I'm not giving them up, they help mommy not go crazy.

This is what my OB said too.  When I was first pregnant I was worried about hot showers.  She put me at ease and I've enjoyed my baths since!

This.  If anything your DH's hand was probably cold, which made the water seem really hot to him.

Yep, your internal temperature rising is the main thing to worry about. If your weren't feeling over-heated, the baby was probably fine. Also, like other people have said, bath water cools down really quickly.

  • I take baths almost every day.  If I were sweating, red or dizzy after, I would be concerned, but I am not.  Just use common sense.  On another note, I would be annoyed with my husband if he checked up on me in the bath.

  • Because it's an internal temp thing, I think you actually could be worse off to take a really long, hot shower than sitting in the bathtub in warm water. We have a gas water heater, so our water stays hot forever, and the bathroom gets super warm and steamy. I've had to make myself get out before when I knew I was getting too hot. With a bath, like others have mentioned, the water cools down quickly enough that you shouldn't have to worry about it, plus you don't have the steam effect.
