Scary Reminder: Don't open your door to strangers!

This actually happened to a couple of my friends:

I know it's what's going on in Northern Indiana, but it could happen ANYWHERE! Be safe girls!

Re: Scary Reminder: Don't open your door to strangers!

  • Holyshit.

I never NEVER answer my door when Brian's not home. I just don't want to deal with whoever it is, honestly, and then of course there's a safety issue.

We put a very ghetto-looking "no soliciting" sign in our front door window and it has actually worked pretty well, though we did have a guy wanting us to sign a petition come to our door at 9pm the other night. I have no clue why Brian answered the door, but 9pm? Isn't that a little late?

  • Yikes!  So scary.
  • Seriously, reading about this makes me want to puke after I answered the door for the Orkin man awhile back. SO scary. Never again. We have a huge window in the front room of our house next to the front door that I don't love for this very reason. Yikes.

  • Here's my scary dont-answer-the-door story.

I was about 12 weeks pg with Ryan (it was right before Christmas 2008), DH and the dog had just run down the street (<1/2 mile) to get Taco Bell (pg craving!!!).  The doorbell rang and I opened the door...it was a late-teens looking guy and he said he was with the Star.  I left my foot in front of the door, told him I didn't want to renew and he pushed (and was making me uncomfortable.  I told him to 'wait right there' and was going to get my purse, my gun (put it in the kitchen)  and call the cops (DH was a police officer at the time) .  However, he pushed his way in, said it was too cold outside and all of a sudden was in my house.  I positioned myself behind the island, on te side where I knew I had knives.  I texted dh and said get home now.  He called and my phone auto answered and all he could hear was a man talking.  I was honestly afraid to call 911 bc I didn't know what he would do if I did that.  30 seconds later (although it felt like an eternity), DH comes rushing in the door, gun drawn, badge out, the IMPD officer htat lived in our community showed up five minutes later and two state troopers were right behind them.

Turns out, he was a subcontractor of a subcontractor of the Star...and I wasn't the only woman at home alone that he pushed his way into the house of.  He just happened to pick the wrong one.  The VP of distribution or something for Gannett ended up coming down, taking us to dinner to apologize, got us a room at the conrad and we now get the star for the rest of our lives for free (hehe).

PS, I probably would have shot him, if I had a gun--I was honest - to - God afraid for my life...he was bigger and looked stronger than me....

  • I never open the door.  I don't even like it when Jason does.  If we don't know the person, I talk to them through the door.  lol

  • Scary! I never open the door when DH is not at home. We had the kirby come to the door last summer at almost 9pm.
  • Ugh that is scary! I worry about being at home by myself. Luckily we have the dogs who make a lot of noise if anyone comes to the door, and Lola looks pretty scary even though she' a big baby.

I worry about Jake working late and people noticing, but I am a big scaredy cat also.
