Re: since this question was posted below

  • When I was little, my mom worked nights, my dad worked days, and most of the time he was out of town for work (on business trips.) The TV babysat my brothers, sisters and I while my mom slept. All of us turned out great, and had no speech problems what-so-ever. I will NEVER allow my daughter, or any of my kids for that matter, watch that much TV. I interact with my daughter when she is not napping. I feel it is very important. I read to her, and sing to her.But she does watch (very limited) TV. The TV is on during the day, but she doesn;t take interest unless it is Moose and Zee segments or Yo Gabba Gabba. I am not saying the studies are wrong, but I don't think a little bit of TV will hurt her. I feel lucky that how much TV we watched when we were little didn't mess up our development.

  • I agree with you.  what I gathered more so from it was not necessarily the TV was bad, but that some parents were using the TV as educational tools..to which they are not.  Also, that parents who let their child watch TV was less likely to read to/interact/play with their child so they are missing out on that human stimulation.

I'm not saying this is the case with us moms, but that's what I gathered from the article.

also, I saw another study where they demonstrated how TV is not educational.  They took a 2 year old (I think) and showed them how to do a task on TV & then in person.  It took an average of 7 times for the child to be able to do the task..where as it took one To me for the child to grasp the concept when it was shown in person.  (That was years ago & I don't remember what or where it can be found)

I just think all this is interesting.  I don't think TV is necessarily bad in moderation, just like everything else in life!

  • I agree that it isnt an educational tool, but I think it is pretty unlikely that babies in the average household could make it to age 2 with out ever being exposed to TV...And I imagine that a lot of this data is because of parents more than the TV its self...the article said that babies that watch TV are less likely to be read to, that is probalby true, but I dont know if the parents that set them infront of the TV would have read to them anyway? Dont get me wrong, my baby has seen a TV shows, but it isnt how I occupy her every day, but I have friends who let the TV baby sit, and if there was no TV I still dont think they would take the time away from what they have going on to read to them instead. Maybe that is just them though.

  • THANK YOU!!!!  It is crazy how many parent's plop their kids in front of the TV just so they don't have to watch them.  My niece, who is 6, watches almost 5 hours of TV a day!!! She wakes up, turns the TV on, watches it until she goes to DC, comes home and eats dinner in front of the TV then watches a movie before going to bed.  She has no clue how to self entertain herself when the TV is off.  Whenever she comes to my house, she pouts becuase it is time for iCarly and I wont turn the TV on.

I cannot stand it!  I cancelled all my movie channels and extended cable today...mostly to save $40 but also because there is no need to watch 4 hours of golf reruns DH....

  • We have the TV on all.the.time, even before bed we watch old DVD's of Friends of the office and have the sleep timer on... DS doesnt watch though, we are playing with him or he is busy with his toys/iPad/concentrating on learning how to balance or walk around the ottoman. the only time he stops to watch TV is when an apple commercial comes on for the iPad... We are a huge TV household, we DVR all kind of shows and watch them after work. I have no idea what I am going to do when DS gets older because I don't want him glued to the set either. We are taking baby steps and instead of staying in all weekend, we have a family day somewhere every saturday. for now, sundays are still football all day
