We are running a cool mist humidifier for S. Actually, her doctor said to run it all winter long as the house's heater dries out the air. I have one I got from Walmart (Sunbeam?) and I don't it because it is too loud. I saw one at Walgreens last week that did a cool mist and was very quiet. Wish I had shopped around a bit more.
I like the warm mist instead of the cold mist because it makes it a degree or two warmer in her room. That way we can turn the heat down to 67 or 68 at night and it's still 69 or 70 in her room. I just bought a second one yesterday for our room while I was at toys r us. I had a 20 % off coupon to use.
"ideally higher so that the mist can rain down on him"
I don't suggest that. The mist can make things pretty damp--you don't want him to catch a chill or his PJs to get damp.
I turn Baby's on about 30 minutes before he goes to bed and I'll keep the door shut to keep the moisturized air in his room. It does the trick. I have it sitting on the floor and fair distance away from his crib and he's been just fine.
Oh, and the Crane model is super quite--I have to look at the on light to verify it's turned on.
The second from the left on the top row. I like it because once you fill it, it takes (depending on the setting) several days before you have to fill it up again.

We have a Crane humidifier and it's been on every night since we brought M home from the hospital. It's normally on medium but we crank it up when he's congested.
Our pedi said it desn't mayyer what brand (could be a cheap one from pharmacy) as long as it is brand new or clean. The key is not to get it contaminated with bacteria.

I agree with the post about turning it on 30 mins before bed with the door closed. I put it on the floor across the room from her. I pick it up suring the day because we also use a regular steam (not the cool mist) humidifier. Her room is cool enough already (north east corner of the house) so I don't use a cool mist. Oh, and the steam humidifier is pretty much silent and has a place to put some Vicks or other scent/oil.

Re: Question re: humidifiers
I have a cool-air humidifier, I think it's the Crane brand and I'm pleased with it.
Over Thanksgiving LO was congested, so I turned his on and it helped...I also used saline spray for his nose and that helped a lot, too.
I hope T feels better soon.

I also have a Crane Cool Mist Humidifier in Aaron's room (the Elephant) and think it really helps with the dryness.
