Everytime I see a slide show, I ball... I'm interested, DH is leary. I think its a time in our life where things are going to happen so fast that we're not going to remember it all. i think capturing it in photos is an interesting idea.
I was intrigued so I looked some up, and it was easy for me to make up my mind. Absolutely NOT for me! There is no way I want to remember myself looking like that. The only picture that would be worthwhile for me would be the ones where they place the baby on your chest. The rest, I've been told that women generally forget the horrors of labor, the body takes care of itself by not saving those memories, and I think in that case nature knows best.

While I also bawl (not ball) whenever I see a birth slide show, there is no way that I will do a photo session. Labor photos are gorgeous if done right, but they are not for me. I would rather save the money for newborn photos than pictures of me going through labor.
I wouldn't want some photographer I barely know in there while my doctors are checking my vag left and right, pushing, etc. You can have pictures taken without having to hire a photographer. I had my DH and my Mom in my birth room and we have the type of pictures you discussed further in the post. I'd save the money and spend it on NB photos.
Check with your doctor before you hire someone. I know in my hospital they do not allow photography or video during the actual birth. Apparently there are issues with people suing doctors and using this as evidence if something goes wrong! We were also not allowed to take photos/videos at our sonograms.
You mean birth like labour? I didn't know people did this...
This. I am doing newborn photos, I'm debating whether or not to do maternity. They will all be done tastefully.

I just wanted to chime in here- I'm a birth photographer and feel the need to defend For one, we are not just standing there right by your vagina as the doctors check you. I step behind the curtain every time the nurses come in to do a check, change positions for mom, etc. I don't take pictures of anyone's vagina unless they specifically ask me to, and only one client has ever done that (she wanted crowning shots).
I don't think my clients consider me a total stranger- months before their due date we go out for lunch or dinner to meet and chat a bit, we exchange lots of emails/phone calls leading up to the big day and by the end of their experience we consider each other friends. It's not like the first time we see each other is while they are pushing the baby out
Most of my clients hire me for one main reason- to capture the days events as no family member ever could. They want their mom's/husband's/insert family member here to enjoy the day and the baby and be IN the pictures, not worrying about taking them. There wasn't a birth photog in my area when I had my son. I have a very small handful of (crappy) photos and not at all a good representation of the emotions that we felt that day. I'm glad to have them, but I would give anything to have the full story as it was a long labor and I was heavily medicated by the time they decided I needed a c/s, therefore I remember hardly anything.
Birth photography isn't for everyone, and it is definitely an investment but that's a whole other post for a whole other day But it's such a great thing to have and look back on, to share with your child and let them see how their birth day was! For those that are interested in it, I highly encourage you to find a good photographer in your area, one that you like and that shows interest in photographing your birth because she is truly passionate about it...it really does make a difference.
Ive never seen or heard of it before! They were beautifully done! I personally wouldnt do it, but if it's done like this I could see why others would. Thanks for sharing though, got me all teary eyed.
I'm friends with a bunch of photographers, one of whom shot DS's birth free of charge since we're good friends. I'm so glad she was there. The whole thing went by faster than my wedding day and everything was a blur for me.
We're definitely having her there for #2. If she wasn't available I'd definitely hire someone even though money is really tight for us right now. It's that important to me.
I like the idea but I also remembered how I looked immediately after I gave birth to DD, which wasn't pretty. I left DH in charge of hospital photos and to be honest, there are not really any that I like so it's definitely something for us to think about this time.
We did do professional newborn pics when DD was 2 days old in our house and we will definitely be doing that again this time.

I agree, I definitely don't want some stranger in there. Luckily MIL is a photographer and I'm thinking she might want to take some pictures, I'd have no problem with that.
The ones that I have seen that are nice & tasteful have been:
-black & white
-captured the sweet, happy moments, not the painful faces & such
-captured the anticipation & excitement
-angles that were flattering, not revealing
-captured the little things, like baby being weighed, babies feet, baby on mom's chest, the loving fatherly look and tears in the eyes ...
-etc, etc, etc
I really like the sound of all of those, but there is no way I could do it. I absolutely do not want any cameras in there until after the baby is born, and I've had a moment to clean up. That, and the fact that there will be enough people in the room; I don't want anyone in that room other than DH who is not medically necessary.
We've already booked ours. There's a photog on my local who does amazing birth photos. She only photographs whatever angle is ok with you and nothing inappropriate. We're excited to know that we're not only relying on DH to take the pics. Now he can just be a part of the process and be in the pics. And we get pro pics out of it. I booked her back around 6-7 weeks pregnant. :-) We've also booked maternity and newborn shots with another local photog.

I looked at some birth photos and that they look awesome. I really can not deal with the bloody water births though.
But like a PP if done right they can be great. I just do not thik it is for me.
Yes, you have a photographer meet you at the hospital, they stay with you the entire time, capturing the wait, the pain the excitement...

Nope sorry, that is a moment only to be shared at that time.
I do hope to have some pics done right afterwards though.
I would love to do it. Unfortunately, there is only one photog in my area that does it and I don't think she's very good.
Besides, it can be quite pricey.

Thanks for the links. Its beautiful. Not my thing, but to each their own.
