Blood Work for a 1+ year old???

Hi Ladies,

My daughter is 14 mo. and her pediatrician gave me a script to go get blood work done.  It's probably just a baseline, but did anyone else take their child to get bloodwork done this young?  The thought of holding her for a blood draw makes me cringe.....my DH is taking her.  Thanks!

Re: Blood Work for a 1+ year old???

  • Someone asked this a few weeks ago and several people had it done, so I am guessing it's routine.

My guy had blood drawn at 15 m. for a different reason.  The people there will know what to do. It was hard to watch because they had 3 nurses plus me holding him still, but it's quick. Good luck!

  • Yup, I asked this not too long ago, and it is normal. They are checking for lead and iron deficiency.

  • Yep, we had to do it after her 12 mo. appt (or maybe it was 15mo....I don't remember). It sucked holding her for it, but she was totally fine once it was all over.

  • DD has had several blood draws and almost all of them the person was great! They got the vein first try! DD only got annoyed when they wanted to hold her arm straight!

Hopefully it goes just as well for you! It's always hardest of the parents!

This is key! Do you know where she'll be having the blood draw done? Sometimes it's in the office, others farm it out to a hospital.  If possible, try to find the best phlebotomist...maybe by talking to others you know in the practice, etc. It makes a world of difference. GL!

  • DD just had this done at her 12 mo appt. It was just a prick on her finger and she took it like a champ, no tears! Don't worry too much, it might not be so bad.

  • He's had it done twice.  One for an allergy test and another time for a complete blood count.  It sucked, but he was fine within a few minutes after.

  • DS has blood work done for his 1 year appt. I was dreading it but the worst of it was him not wanting to sit being held still. It wasn't as bad as I expected. GL!
