Pumping woes

So there are two rooms at work where I can sometimes pump but by no means are they 'my pumping rooms'.  Both are being used today apparently and so now I have no place to pump.  This happens often and when it has happened in the past I have gone home to work.  My boss recently is not too excited about that so today I feel like I have to stay.  Any ideas on what to do today or what to do in the future? I don't have batteries for my pump nor do I have the car adapter today.

  • Go buy batteries? There should be a designated area for you to use. If he doesn't like you going home, ask him where you should go then. You can always start plugging in to an adapter in his office to drive the point home...

I would ask your boss or your office admin to get you a back-up place in case this happens again.

This exactly. They need to find a better place for you.

  • That would drive me crazy. When I need to pump, I need to pump! I would talk to him again and see if he can think of anywhere (I use a server room...) and if he can't, then work at home and maybe contact HR?

  • Well not ideal, I have sat on the floor of the ladies bathroom (or on the counter if there is enough room) and used the outlet there. Again not ideal, but I've made it work. I pull my shift over my shields and as necessary hold them in place from over my clothes.
  • Thanks Ladies.  I went to the woman's bathroom area which has a chair and I just did it there.  Several women came in while I was pumping but I just said 'I have a three month old' and everyone was fine. It took me 20 minutes to get what I normally get in 10 because I felt a little stressed about it but I figure that if I have to keep doing this then I'll get more comfortable.

What makes this situation a little bit worse, IMO, is that my boss is a woman.  I feel like she should understand.

  • I know some people would never do it, but I pumped in the bathroom when I had nowhere else.  It was a single bathroom that locked, not a stall.  I just put tons of paper towels down and didn't let the bottles or any of the pump parts touch anything.
