I spoke with my RE directly a few minutes ago and got more info on DH's results. Apparently his sperm concentration is normal, but his motility is 43% which is low.
One of the biggest issues though is his volume, which was 1/2 a ml; a quick google search shows that 1.5 ml is on the low side of normal, so his is very low. Basically, not that much comes out in total,so the concentration being good doesn't help much. She thought maybe some spilled out or something but I am afraid the test results are right. I apologize for the TMI, but in the back of my mind I've always had that concern about him and I think I was in denial until now. Based on my discussions with her I feel like this isn't a very common problem. It could be a urological issue with something blocked somewhere.
He goes in for another SA on Monday, and if it shows the same results he'll get a referral to a urologist. She did say that I can still get pregnant, we just may have to go right to IVF instead of starting with IUI.
I don't think any of you here have male factor infertility issues, right? I have a ton of questions about it. I may have to start posting on TTTC too.
As an aside, I'm very grateful that the offices on both sides of mine are vacant, because I have spent half the day on the phone talking to people about DH's sperm and the walls here are thin!
Re: Update on DH's SA
Sorry to hear that! MH just had his SA done too. He was slightly lower on "rate" and "viscosity". I'm not familiar with either of them but the analysis summary said that we are a good candidate for IUI. I think I'm finally coming to terms that we will need ART to assist in achieving a pregnancy. In the back of my mind I felt like we would and so I made the RE appointment. But then when my OB said we should see a specialist, I felt so different about it becuase it wasnt by choice any longer. Silly, I know.
I can't imagine that the pressure of making a deposit doesnt have something to do with low volume. You know? It's not like they look forward to that. Just my .02.
Hope that Monday goes better for you guys!

Thanks ladies. I feel better about this today. DH and I talked about this last night. I downplayed the results to him to make it seem like it wasn't that big of a deal, I just didn't want him to know how upset I was when I got the news. He wasn't thrilled but seemed to take it okay.
Apparently all of his, uh, sample didn't make it into the cup (he said most of it did, but maybe 25% didn't), so I told him next time to aim better! We'll see if that improves the results. I still think there are issues with him but am extremely thankful that we caught it early (we've only been trying 8 months) and that I do have insurance coverage to do at least a couple rounds of IVF if it comes to that.
Ladies, if any of you are on the fence about going to get tested, do it! Now that it seems unlikely that we can get PG on our own, I'm soooo glad I didn't waste any time getting to the RE.
TTC #1 since 4/10, Dx: MFI IVF planned for April/May
Sorry about the low numbers but every guy can have a bad day. Hopefully the 2nd SA goes better.
Definitely go over to 3T, the ladies there are so helpful and a number are dealing with MFI, so if you do have questions they have the info!
Btw, I laughed when I read about the thin walls, I feel the same way in my office. I hope no one can hear all my conversations about sperm, cm, when AF arrives, etc.
I couldn't agree more. Thankfully the RE will accept all the results that my OB ordered, so I won't have to "start over" but I wonder if we could have gotten to the IUI phase that much faster. As it stands now, our first RE appointment is on Feb. 4th.
So for those wondering OB vs. RE, I completely agree. Especially at our ages, just go straight to the RE.
Best of luck with that second sample!
So true. I am so happy to have an OB who wanted to get us to the RE asap. We only had to wait 6 months to get our refferal. My H's Dr. gave him orders to go get tested but he wanted to wait until the RE visit first. He's not exactly excited to handle his business in a cup. bless his heart.
Lucy, how did your surgery go?
