Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Cost of formula?!

I was just lurking on 3-6 and someone asked about how much formula costs.  Obviously it depends on the kind and how much your kid eats but one woman told the OP to expect it to cost "$200-$300 possibly more" a month.  Whaaaa???  Do any of you spend that much on regular (meaning, not Alimentum, Nutramigen, etc.) formula??

Re: Cost of formula?!

  • No!  We spend about $60ish a month.  We also buy generic so that really helps but 200-300 just seems crazy!  Are they buying some with gold flakes added in there or something?!

  • Nope!  We do the Similac ready to feed even and only spend around $110 a month (before they cut the price on RTF from the recalled powder formula.)

  • Wow that's ridiculous! We use Target's up & up brand sensitive formula, it's about $15 a can. We prob go through 5-6 of their smaller cans a month so that's about $75-90 a month...

  • Good Start Protect Plus is $19.97 - $22.49/can and we buy approximately two (maybe three) cans per week so that's anywhere from $159.76 - $269.88 per month.

  • DD is on Nutramigen, and I would say we spend about $150 a month. Each can costs about $33.

So, even on a specialized formula, we don't spend $200-300 a month.

ETA: Okay so I did the math. We spend over $150...but I would say $200 max.
  • umm... no. we spend $22/week and a lot of times less when it's on sale and when we use coupons and checks :)

  • I know you weren't exactly asking but DD is on Neocate (have to order directly from the supplier) and it is about 300-400 a month.  That is better than it used to be since she is eating solids 3x a day now and doesn't take as mucb formula.  Either way, Neocate is more expensive than Nutramigen so there is no way regular formula costs that much.

Yes This. But I've never purchased formula without a coupon and/or check.

How much does you DS drink at a feeding?  I use Good Start and try to find the big cans and I only use about one a week.  I'm not trying to be snarky - just curious because I can't imagine DS drinking double to triple what he does now.

  • WTF kind of formula is she feeding her baby? I'm curious about that. ETA: Nevermind. When I look back, I saw $300. For some reason, the first time I saw that, I saw $600 and my eyes were huge.

    I'm similar to Cytina.

We buy the Similac Sensitive for Spit Up. It's about $20.00 a can, and we buy two-three a week. So, it's about $240.00 a month.

Dreamsicle, he eats 6 ounces at a time, usually every 2-3 hours. I'm hoping that as he gets more and more solids that we will decrease his amount of formula. I can't wait for the year mark when (hopefully) he will be totally done with formula...

  • We use Up & Up and spend less than $75/month.

  • We buy Target brand and it's $15/large can.  I guess we buy 2 at a time and use 2 in 2 weeks maybe?  I never keep track, but I'd say it's about $60/m.

  • we buy parents choice formula (this was before i started relactating) and we would spend 11.88 a week  so we spent about 50-60 dollars a month. now we spend closer to 20ish
  • I don't even spend that much on two babies

Does your insurance cover any of the cost.  Our insurance gives us 13 cans of Neocate and 8 Cans of Nutra a month.  If you add up the cost....its vast....I don't think I'd be able to afford it.

  • No way.

We switched from name brand to generic when she turned 7 mos, and I pay about $60 a month.

Just this morning I was able to buy a 24oz can for $7.50, with a store coupon.

  • ...lurking.

But we spend about $100 a month of formula. If we got it at Sams all the time like we try to, we'd spend closer to $70 a month. We get Enfamil powder.

This exactly... minus the relactating part. We go through about 1 can a week so we are at about $50 a mo.

  • That seems like a lot, but I guess if you only buy ready to feed, then $200 a month might be the case. I can't see how someone could spend $300 a month on formula for one baby.

I buy four of the 30oz cans of powdered Good Start per month. They are regularly priced at $24.99, but BRU has different promos where they usually come out to $22.50 or $19.99 each.  Plus I use whatever checks or coupons I can get my hands on.  One month I bought four cans for $36 total.  Usually my cost is about $70-$80 per month.

  • Before starting solids, and only using name brands without checks/coupons we would have been spending about $200/month.

In reality. using checks/coupons or buying Target brand would have brought that down to $125 ish.  Once we started solids his formula intake cut in half.

Oh my!  Look how cute Britton is getting!  He looks completely different that he did a couple months ago!
