Nurse: "Oh! I see he was a preemie! How early was he?"
Me: "26 weeks."
Nurse: "Oh! He's doing so well. I can tell he's a preemie but his head will get more round in time.'
Me: "Actually, I think that's genetics...my side of the family has a long face shape. He does have some scars but you would have to look closely to see them."
Nurse: "Oh, I see that now."
lmao!!!!!!
Re: foot in mouth
OK, I have a really ignorant question.
What exactly did the nurses do to affect A's head shape? I'm so uneducated on what goes on when a preemie is born.
oh, sorry, no problem! I wouldn't have known either
At 26 weeks obviously they should be in utero, floating - - weightless so to speak.
When they are born early they rotate how they lay - Andrew mostly on his tummy (breathe and digest better), but stomach, back, and then turn their heads from left, right, and straight ahead. Otherwise, they get major flat spots from laying. A lot of preemies have very very prominent flat spots where their head is very mis-shapen. I think for the most part, it goes back round as they age.
One of our friends - 31 weeker - their child's head was just completely flat on the back. He's 2 now and now I don't notice it.
Mary Beth might be able to explain it better.
