Anticipation- BF schedule help!

So it looks like I am going back to work the end of Jan...I still EBF.  I am trying to figure out how I can swing it- I am a teacher- here is my schedule-

Leave house by 7:30am- arrive @ 8:30am, kids come @9:15am prep @10:15 lunch @1pm leave @3:30pm home by 4:30pm.

It is NOT realistic for me to pump during my prep and lunch- as I teach Kindergarten and there is so much "prep" work to do when the kids are not there.  I am really nervous of my supply taking a big hit but am willing to try.

So I can nurse her before I leave around 6:30 she wakes up- but when else would you pump if you were me? My commute is 1 hour each way- would you pump in the car??

Suggestions welcome as I brace myself for this change in lifestyle Crying

  • I would get a hands free bra and pump during your prep and lunch. I'm not a teacher so i'm not sure what goes into prep. Also, where will you be able to pump? That may change my suggestion....

  • You can't pump during your prep and lunch, even with a hands free pumping bra?  Sorry - I'm clueless about teaching in general, especially kindergarteners.  If you can't, I would definitely pump in the car - sounds like your commute is long enough that it shouldn't be an issue.  Hopefully your body will adjust and you will pump enough milk in just two sessions.  I pump 3x at work and I don't pump enough for DD.  I used to have a great supply but it started to go downhill around 8 months.  I have to pump extra on my days off and every night before I go to bed.

  • I would pump in the car on the way there and then again on the way home and try to find one more pump session in the middle of the day if you can...for me I really only need like 15 min from start to finish to get my pumping done...I  really havent noticed a problem with my supply now that im pumping and BF at home...just try to eat oatmeal in the morning and drink lots of water during the day...and when you are at home on the weekends BF and try to pump once in the morning after a feeding and maybe again at night to keep your supply up...GL!!

  • Yeah, with that hour commute I'd either pump in the car or right after you get to work/before you go home, and try to squeeze in one more in the middle of the day.  And nurse, nurse, nurse on evenings/weekends.

Also, I have a mental image of you with pumping with a hands-free bra, with the pump around your waist, running around after kindergartners.  It would be the ultimate Medela Freestyle commercial, no?

  • I'm going back in a week and a half. ::cries::  I teach 6th grade and don't have the best schedule break wise. Since the week I go back is only 3 days it will be my test run. If it doesn't work, I'll be switching to formula. This is what I plan on doing. Wake up and pump at 5. Feed Andrew at 6 (I tried this the other day and he still got plenty) Pump at 11 (prep) Pump at 2:30 (end of day) Then nurse the rest of the day/evening. I'm sure my supply will tank at first but I hope to build it back up once my body adjusts. I really don't know. I'm just preparing myself for formula if necessary. I do have about 300 oz frozen though.

  • Absolutely order the simple wishes hands free pumping bustier. Life saver. I use the freestyle and DO pump in the car. I would definitely do that for both your trip to and from work. My pump fits OB my scrubs pocket, but since my guess is you'll be wearing business casual mostly, you might want to use the waist belt, if you have the freestyle. If you have a PISA, not sure how you can make that more portable. Good luck!
