What do I do? I've never had a puking baby before & I don't know what to do! Do I offer her water, give her meds? She's been throwing up since 6:00 off & on. I can't even put her in her to bed to sleep because she throws up & wakes herself up so DH & I are trying to get her to sleep in our bed, which is not going over too well. Any advice, help, tips, ANYTHING would be great!
Re: DD seems to have the stomach flu, PLEASE HELP!
Definitely do your best to keep her hydrated. Cool water, chilled pedialyte in small sips. Tylenol for aches/pains/fever. If she's wants to eat, no dairy, clear soup broths, plain toast and the BRAT diet are great. Lot of love and cuddles helps too.
The flu ripped through our house Thanksgiving Long. It's tough on the LO's.
Hope she feels better soon.
Call your doc and ask for a prescription for Zofran (very safe anti vomit med). Offer small volumes of liquids (which can be anything from popsicles to watermelon to soup). People used to recommend bland diets, but that's less common now. Solids aren't important, liquids are. Peeing less than 3-4 times in 24 hours means likely dehydration, so may need fluids (NOT NECESSARILY AN IV). Seriously...call and ask about the Zofran. If severe abdominal pain, go to ER.
ETA: Pedialyte and other electrolyte solutions are fine, but they taste NASTY. So if your kiddo only wants watermelon or OJ, that's fine. (This is assuming s/he's over 12mo).
Thank you so much ladies! Just went up to check on her & DH & her are passed out in our bed, so cute. I'll definitely make sure to keep her hydrated! I was giving her water at first, but she kept throwing it back up. Guess I'll wait a bit until the puking subsides a bit. This is seriously the most AWFUL thing I've gone through since DD was born! Now I'm super worried that DH & I are going to get it as well since the stomach flu tends to spread like freaking wildfire!
Stupid question: Is something like Gatorade considered an electrolyte drink? I thought I heard that it is, but just wanted to double check. Is it ok to give her that until I can get to the store in the morning? I'm a bad momma who doesn't have any pedialite (sp?) in the house, guess I will from here on out!
Gatorade is fine until the morning - hope she feels better soon.
Oh and when Monk got the stomach flu I got it about 24 hours later.
Thanks, she's a tough little cookie!
And that's what I was afraid of! She'll be feeling better & both DH and I will be down for the count with it!
Serenity now!!!! LOL!
Hi, my LO had the same thing over the weekend. Not fun! I have read that you're supposed to wait 12-24 hrs before offering food, but my LO can never make it that long. He'll be crying for food 4-5 hours after throwing up. I give him crackers, puffs, Cheerios--stuff that pretty much dissolves. If he handles those ok, I start giving him real food at the next meal, but keep it kind of bland. He is such a picky eater...his normal diet is not that much better than the BRAT diet!
Hopefully, your LO will be feeling better soon. DH and I managed to avoid getting sick ourselves. Wash your hands A LOT!
