IUD users, a few ?s

I'm thinking of getting an IUD and I'm looking for a little more info from people who have them. Which one do you have (Mirena or Paraguard)? How was the insertion? Do you like it? Why did you decide to get it? Any side effects?

TIA!

Re: IUD users, a few ?s

  • I have the Mirena. The insertion is a piece of cake, it feels like a mild cramp and is pretty fast. I like it because I don't have to worry about a pill everyday and I can have it until we decide to get pregnant again. I decided to get it because it was only $25 with my insurance for birth control that lasts for years. The only side effect I experienced was mild bleeding for 3 weeks after. But it was worth it because now I just get symptoms of a mild period with no bleeding, it's so great. Hope this helps!

  • I've had Paragard for a year now.  I have no complaints.  It didn't hurt to have it put in but then again I took one of my husband's pain killers so I was high as a kite when I had it done....so I'm not the best to give you an honest answer about the actual procedure.

I have Mirena, I got it at 10 weeks pp.  The insertion was painless--I was actually nursing DD throughout.  I had minimal cramping that evening--barely noticeable.  I had spotting for about 4 weeks after it was inserted, which is the only "bad" thing--dr said it can last anywhere from a few days up to 6 months.  I love it.  I got it because I want at least a couple of years between pregnancies and my only other option while breastfeeding was the mini-pill which must be taken at the exact same time every day.  No side effects so far.  I have not had a period, not sure if its from the Mirena, breastfeeding or the combo.  I love that one of the side effects is no longer having periods though, and hope I am one of the lucky ones who never gets them while on it.

  • I got the Mirena put in about a month ago. It was not a pleasant insertion (not abnormal at all, but it hurts). I had a little bleeding that day and have been fine ever since. I will definitely do it again after the next LO. I had already weaned so I don't know if it would have affected my supply. No other side effects. I wanted it because I thought I'd be able to remember taking the pill everyday like pre-pregnancy. I was wrong and I don't want another LO for at least another year. My insurance covered it completely this year since I met my deductible and out of pocket with my c-section.

My doctor said only about 20% never get any periods anymore. I had some bleeding now (just about one month), but it's not as bad as periods were. So far, I am happy.

  • Mirena

Easy as pie.  Spotted the first day, had menstrual like cramps for the rest of the day, then nothing.  For the first 2 months I could still "feel" it in there as everything was settling down, but it didn't hurt.  Just felt odd.

I like it a lot.  I never have to remember to take a pill, I don't have to worry about getting pregnant again, and I've had no side effects.

  • I have the Paraguard.  The insertion was pretty easy.  There was some discomfort afterward, but not a lot.  I really like it because there are no hormones.  And I really like not having to remember to take a pill or change a patch.

  • I have Mirena... Insertion was pain-free, but I've had it since September & I'm still spotting.  I never had any cramping and I cannot feel it at all, but the spotting is becoming really annoying.
  • Had the Mirena before TTC.  Loved it.  Insertion not pleasant but I hadn't had a baby yet so cervix was Fort Knox.  No side effects.  Best of all no period for 5 years.

  • I got the Paragard inserted yesterday. Insertion wasn't that bad. The moment after they put it in was like one giant labor contraction. It was pretty uncomfortable. But it was just one. I cramped moderately for the next few hours, but I was okay without painkillers. By the evening, I felt fine, and today I haven't had any cramping. I'm spotting a tiny bit, but not badly. Overall, a positive experience considering I pretty much don't have to worry about BC until we decide to try for #2, which isn't going to be for several years!

Same for me.  I got it at the end of September and still have the annoying spotting.  I am really hoping it ends soon.
