Parenting after a Loss

Why aren't your babies like mine?

Why do all your babies love solids & cereals but mine hates them with a passion? He even squeals when he sees the highchair out of fear?

Re: Why aren't your babies like mine?

  • I have no answers for you other than we put Ellie in a bumbo- no highchair yet for her!

BTW: I LOVE that pic of LO in your siggy- freakin adorable!

  • If he doesn't seem to be interested, just wait.  He is still pretty young and my guy didn't seem to want to try them until he was almost 6 months old.

  • Yeah, I only tried a few times but he hates it, then I hate it bc he hates it so much. Oddly he will tolerate a couple of veggies but detests cereal! Oatmeal & rice

Ellie has only had avocado so far...I am not a fan of the rice cereal stuff.  I may still do it but I hate how processed it is.  I'd much rather her munch on some guacamole!!

His thighs are too thick for a Bumbo. (he did enjoy that little bit of candy cane though)

  • Jace absolutely hates cereal too! Try pears or peaches or something sweet to get him used to eating solids. Also I started out putting J in his bouncer so it leans him back a little and feed him and he liked it much better than his high chair. Maybe try that until he gets the hang of it. We have been feeding J solids for almost a month and he just now doesnt scream when I put him in the high chair and opens his mouth for food.

  • I put a little cinnamon on oatmeal & cereal and that seems to make it more appealing. Just a thought...

  • Nope, mine too. He HATES cereal...won't eat it to save his life. We've been trying for 5 weeks now. I have to con him into smiling to open his mouth then 50% is spit out.

He got smart and smiles with his mouth shut. Stinker...

  • Dont worry about it, at this point it is just practice. Jake never liked any baby foods .. Cereals or any of the jar foods. Once we started trying real foods he LOVED eating, now he eats everything .. Sushi, Indian food , vegetables. You name it he eats it ... Well not cake

  • Wait a bit.  DS#1 had no interest in anything until 6 months, and my Pedi was very pro waiting until then.

And I agree oatmeal was a way bigger hit than cereal when he finally did come around.

But what if he won't open his mouth? Does that get better and if so is it gradual?

    And sushi...wow!

Have you tried it?  That shizz is nasty.

Give him time.  Every kiddo is different.  I think more kids would benefit from a delayed intro to solids. . .

  • Because your baby is 2 1/2 months younger than mine. The first time DS tried solids, he was not impressed. We waited like another month to try again, and at that point, he was excited. Given Colin's size (he's hardly starving!), and given how it totally changes their poop, I'd wait as long as he'll let you.

  • Did you try with sweeter things like sweet potato or bananas? Cabe makes faces when we feed  him things like pears and apples...

  • My guess is he's just not ready.  4.5 months is on the early side to start solids.  My DD1 didn't start until 5 mo.  We tried at 4 and she got awful indigestion.  With DD2 we are waiting until 6 months.
