Toddler eating habits

Anyone else's LO turning into a picky eater? Fiona has not been eating much of her dinner. She'll gobble up mashed potato and yogurt and cereal, but anything else I give her goes pretty much untouched. I don't think she can be eating enough...although she doesn't seem hungry in between meals.

Re: Toddler eating habits

  • Yep.  My good eater can be a PITA!  One night something is great, try to finish it off the next night, and it's all over the floor.  I asked our pedi about it at Ellie's 12 month last week, and she said not to worry, just keep giving her different foods and she'll eat when she's hungry and will not starve herself.  She was also firm in telling us not to be short order cooks or else we'd just have a world of trouble until she went to college :)  For us, soygurt, pasta, avocado, cereal bars/fig newtons, toast and most fruit still are gobbled up.  Veggies and meat are much iffier.

  • M's picky, but it varies. His tastes wax and wane. The only constant is his love of bananas.
  • Tara - knew there was something nagging at the back of my mind when I replied.  Betsy, who was at Ellie's party, loves the book Child of Mine - can't remember the author's name.  It's a book about toddlers and eating - since her LO was diagnosed with CP and is a small guy, they did a slew of testing to make sure everything was OK.  She said this was like a breath of fresh air and Jack seems to be eating better.  I have a request in for it already and will share :)
  • Margaux is totally hit or miss.  For some reason she has decided she doesn't want yogurt for a while, which sure throws a wrench into breakfast.  She will always eat meatballs or smushed meat of any kind, like potsticker innards.  Today she had spam musubi, or at least the parts that weren't rice.  Veggies are okay if they're soaked in meat juice, like in soups.  Just now she's gleefully sharing my dried apricots.

All in all, though, it seems like she's not eating a lot.

  • C is a very picky eater.  Right now it's all about black olives.   Some days he won't eat finger foods.  Somes days he won't eat purees.  Raisins?  Sometimes.  Craisins? Sometimes.  Bread?  Sometimes.   He's not consistent at ALL!

  • Totally normal.  S was super-picky until she turned two.  Now she's much more adventurous.  She still has weird days, days where she eats a ton, days where she eats almost nothing.  They're pretty good at self-regulating.
  • Sarah used to love anything soft and pureed but for the last couple of months, she wouldn't let us feed her anymore and she can't feed herself with a spoon yet. So now all she eats are finger foods - cornflakes, bread, Gerber crunchies, cookies mostly. The only other thing she'll eat are Plum Organics fruit or vegetable purees in these little bags that she can squeeze into her mouth herself. She won't eat any 'real' fruit or vegetables. I stopped stressing about it and feel much better now.

Ada does this too - it's about the only way I can get a veggie into her. Fruits are not typically a big problem, especially strawberries. Avocado is about the only constant with eggs, noodles, and tofu coming in at a close second third and fouth.
