Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Holding their own bottle

When did your baby start holding her own bottle?  I am pretty sure DD is "able" to, I just dont think she wants to.  I wish she would though, it would make some things a little easier!

  • DS is able to, he just doesn't want to. When he sees the bottle his arms seriously go limp and he expects someone to do the work for him. There are several kids older than him in his daycare class that still don't hold their own bottle.
  • DD1 - 11 mo, DD2 - not yet.  Both have been BF and DD1 took bottles at daycare.  DD2 refuses bottles, but has held her sippy for months (but it has two handles too!).
  • I think it was around 7 months, give or take.  It hadn't occurred to me that she might be able to until the doctor asked if she could.  So I started giving her in the bottle in her high chair and seeing what she could do by herself.  She figured out how pretty quickly and now she's a pro.
  • have you tried to just place it on her chest and let go? sometimes he'd rather me hold it but if I do this he grabs it and takes over. =)

  • I don't remember with my oldest son. My baby is just now starting to hold is own bottle. He doesn't do it every single time though either.

  • DS started doing this about 2 weeks ago.  It has to be one of my favorite developments by far!  I still hold him 98% of the time, but it's nice to have the option.

  • He's been holding it on his own for almost two months(laying down), but only recently has he started to learn how to "tip" it for more to come out when he is sitting up.

  • DS was able to around 6 months, but he never wanted to. Just last night he grabbed it himself and was holding it up.
  • He was almost 6 months old.  Now he won't have it any other way.  He always has to do it on his own.

  • My DD just started doing this a few weeks ago and she is 10 months old!  But, she was a preemie and has never been that interested in eating.  I am sure she has been able to do it for a long time, just not that into it.

  • What is funny about this question to me is that I thought my DD didn't do this until I was at her daycare conference last night and they told me she holds her own bottle.  She will do it for them but not for me.  Not sure when she started but she is 7 months old now.  I think my DH said she has tried to do it for him too.  My 2 year old never held her own bottle but started drinking from her sippy cup herself at around 8 months.

  • DD doesn't, but oh man I wish she would! These days she refuses to be cradled while drinking her bottle, she wants to sit up in my lap which make it difficult to feed her. How nice it would be if she would hold it herself!

  • DD held her own around 4.5 months, but hasn't done it since.  She's a lazy baby, lol.
  • 6 months... she won't even let me do anymore.

  • Mady started holding it around 6 months and became "lazy" and had me do it. Then around 8 months she would hold it and tip it when it became empty. It's really nice!

  • Well, crap. My 9 month old doesn't try and isn't interested, even though I try. He just cries and looks at me desperately. And forget the sippy--he wants nothing to do with it. I'm not sure what I should be doing. I'm sure he can do it.

  • DD can but won't and she will be one VERY soon!
  • I don't think he really started to until around  months.  He could hold his sippy just fine but the bottle forget it.  He didn't even try for the longest time, I seriously thought he wouldn't do it.
