How do you know when your baby "drops"?

I've heard people talk about the baby dropping...what does this mean exactly and how do you know when it does?  Does this mean the baby is getting ready for delivery / labor.....how long after the baby drops do you generally deliver?

Re: How do you know when your baby "drops"?

  • *lurking* and not gonna lie, stalking a little bit to see if your fluid levels improved :)  For me, I was walking around the house one morning, looked down and went "holy crap, my baby fell down!"  My stomach looked completely different, it looked like I was 6 months pregnant again.  It is the baby moving into a delivery position, although mine dropped around 36 maybe 37 weeks, and I was induced at 40 weeks.

  • When the baby "drops" that means they lower into the position they will be in for delivery. The head engages into your pelvis (if the baby isn't breech) and your cervix & ute drop lower into your pelvis also.

    1. Not everyone drops before delivery. I know plenty of people that didn't "drop" until they were in active labor.

    2. If/when you drop, it is not a sign of impending delivery. I dropped at about 32 weeks (this is not a magic number, lots of people drop earlier/later/not at all). There is no way to determine how far after you drop you will deliver... it could be that day, it could be another month or more.

    3. If/when you drop, you will probably notice a lot of discomfort in your hips, a cramp-like sensation in your lower abdomen (RLP), and will feel what some women describe as "walking with a watermelon between your legs" if the baby is super low.

    Hope that helps!

  • It means that baby went from 'floating' to starting to move through your pelvis.  Once you start having a pelvic station other than 'floating', your baby has started to drop.  It's variable in terms of how long it'll be... apparently in second timers especially, babies will sometimes float until mom goes into labor, but the typical answer is about a week or two.

You'll know it happens, because it gives your kid direct access to smash its head into your bladder.  Like, 'move your laptop and a mini-fridge into the bathroom because you're not leaving' levels of having to pee.

Yeah, me too. I'm now hoping to be that "doesn't drop until labor" person.

  • I've been feeling like the baby is just going to fall out for the last 2 weeks and someone at work pointed out that they noticed from the outside that I dropped. But it freaks dh out when we're walking in a store and I have to slow down because of the pressure and fall out feeling he swears I'm going into labor everytime! Hehehe

This happened to me yesterday.  I was minding my own business in the morning....all afternoon and evening I felt like the child was sitting on my bladder - it's the weirdest feeling!!!

So I will possibly feel like I can breathe again but it gets replaced with the sensation of having to pee 24/7, splendid

You really do want them to drop though because their head helps the dilation.  A lot of women end up induced, then end up with c-section because you can't push a baby out who doesn't engage!  Plus you'll have to push and push to get baby to come down!  Dropping is a good thing, but yes uncomfortable!!

  • I actually dropped this past weekend. I had a dr. appointment yesterday where he confimed that LO is in position. I am not dilated yet but cervix is thinning. A good indicator of your LO dropping other than constant peeing is a lot more pressure/pain in the pubic bone, breathing easier and feeling hungry again. I can eat so much now and it's due to my stomach having more room to expand!

  • I started peeing myself. Haha. No, really. From last week to this week my baby dropped and is at 0 station according to the doctor today who did my internal. I felt like I looked a little lower this morning when I woke up. Plus, in the past few days I have a hard time peeing because she's sitting on my pipes, so to speak. I think all of those factors are connected.

    So, I think I've dropped.

  • I just dropped last Fri, just before hitting 36 weeks. I woke up in PAIN, from the hip bones spreading. It literally felt like they were getting wider and spreading apart! I had to pee every 5 minutes and never felt like my bladder was empty. My stomach was so much lower and I "look" smaller now than I did at 8 months! The pain has lasted about 5 days but it is starting to subside.
