Obsessive Behavior?

Does anyone elses LO get really fixated on things? DS is obsessive about certain things. Right now it is the vaccum...if I am not vaccuming with him in my arms he is not happy. I will put the vaccum in the closet and make him turn off the light and say night night but then 5 minutes later he is at the closet door screaming crying saying "va-va vroom vroom"! He will literally scream and cry in front of that closet for 20 minutes and then go sit in the corner and pout. Nothing will distract him! He has spent the last 3 days upset because we cannot vaccum 24/7...I am totally at a loss about what to do. We bought him a toy vaccum but he won't even look at it. Before this it was the lawn mower and shed for a couple of weeks. When he gets in these obsessive moods nothing will make him happy except the thing he is fixated on...I hate feeling like he is miserable especially when he is usually the happiest, easy breezy kid!

Re: Obsessive Behavior?

  • Too funny about the vacuuming... I don't have any advise for you....

Maybe he likes the noise or something... does his toy vacuum make noise?

  • Too bad he's not old enough to use it on his own Stick out tongue.  OR too bad DH doesn't have the same obsession Big Smile  There are so many scenarios where that could work out well for you.  ha-ha

  • I know! If he was 16 this would be a GREAT problem to have!

Yes the toy vaccum sounds just like the big one!

  • My DD is similar but her fixation is photos and videos, particularly ones of herself. She is a narcissist. We have started flat out refusing and she's much easier to handle than if we give in and try to take it away later. Keep distracting, and keep the item he's fixated on only for specific times/occasions so he knows he can't always have it, but that there is a time when he can.
