Bulb Syringe - REALLY?

I thought this was necessary to repeat from my post to rara...

My BIL who is a pedi says to use it ALL THE TIME with a cold and congestion and my pedi strongly recommends keeping them suctioned too!  I was amazed at the amount of snot I could suck out! If you don't get the snot out, it will make them more congested.

I cannot believe that your pedis are telling you to throw them away. I'm shocked actually!!!

 So, take my poll -

Does your pedi recommend you use the bulb syringe?

Re: Bulb Syringe - REALLY?

  • she HATES it, but we use it anyway.  I can't believe how much snot I suck out of her tiny little nose.  I haven't asked my pedi about it, but my sister is a doctor, and one of my best friends is a pedi, and they both encourage its use.

  • The syringe has been a lifesaver for us.  We carry one in our diaper bag as well.  DS is so used to the nose drops and syringe that he takes it like a man.  We normally would use the syringe every other diaper change so we wouldn't iritate his nose but it works.

  • I don't know what my pedi recommended but I loved the bulb syringe...loved loved it..it was so rewarding to get all of that snot out..I know that sounds weird but REALLY..it was. I was also always amazed at how much was in that little tiny nose!
  • drum roll please, just called the pedi she said use it. Only with a cold and do the saline drops. She said he's not big enough to get it out on his own and it will help him breathe easier.

    ??

  • Perhaps my pedi's reaction was just to the fac that I came in upset with a congested 4 month old baby with a bloody nose.  She said "Don't use it, actually you should just throw it away".  So i did.  Maybe I'm too agressive to use one.  My hubby uses one daily, he has major ENT trouble and has to do nasal flushes daily (TMI?).
  • I've used it, he HATES it but it works...I use it after I give him the Saline Drops and never go overboard as in to inflame his nostrils or give him a bloody nose.

I don't think we've ever discussed this with Kate's pedi. Kim, I SO know what you mean about the rewarding feeling of a snot-free nose! It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I finally get Kate's nose clean. Probably because it is such a struggle. LOL!

  • Oh Emily! That would make some sense if you were giving her bloody noses with it.

Ok this is what BIL the pedi says:

"...babies 2 months and younger can't figure out that they can breathe through their mouths when congested and asleep, so it's imperative these young babies babies have the bulb syringe to get it out. After they can breathe through their mouths while sleeping, it's less important, but you don't want that congestion to stay in there because it can cause sore throats and ear infections (from running down the back of their throats and draining into their ears and just sitting there while they are on their backs)."

  • I have never asked my pedi, but honestly her answer would not sway me. I use it b/c how else is the poor child going to get the snot out of her nose.  Her nostrils are so small I can't stick up there very far anyway.  I usually do the saline drops and then you a good suck with the bulb.

  • I can't vote for some reason, but I have NEVER used one on Jack, literally never.

We did use it on Ethan his first night home, he had a major vomiting episode while lying down and it went up his nose - so we used it to suction out his nose and mouth b/c he was choking on it.

But my pedi's have never mentioned it one way or another...and I've been to two practices.  Maybe b/c Jack has never really been sick?  Of course, he's had minor colds and a random fever here and there, but he's never really had an illness that required being seen by a doctor.

  • hmmm, maybe there was a misunderstanding.  I meant don't squirt saline up the nose and then immediatley suck it out.  That's what our pedi said.

I'm a big fan of the snot sucker.

  • I'm a big fan.....   Nate is not a fan.  BUT it gets the snot out and that makes him a happier boy!  Agree with everyone on the saline.

Lolo, how awesome to have a BIL who is a pedi!  I'd be calling for every little thing, since that is what I actually do with my pedi.  They must hate me.  :)

  • Oh yeah.. BIL gets a call or txt msg about 1x a week.

When Kate had the chicken pox looking bumps we called him and he said, "It's probably viral, not the chicken pox, but hard to tell without seeing her. Give her 1/2 teas of benadryl in case it's allergies and see your real doctor tmro."
