Formula feeding Mommies, When did you transition LO to the next nipple size?

I am still using the nipple size that is 0-3 months.  I was thinking it should be time for DD to go to the next size, but she doesnt seem to be interested.  Every time I try to feed her with that next size up....she wont eat.  Maybe she isnt ready.  How old was your LO when they took the next size up?

  • I switched to a size 2 nipple (Dr. Browns) about 3 weeks ago.  I tried before hand, and the flow was too much for him and he was choking.  Once he started taking what seemed like much longer to finish a bottle, I switched to the next size.

  • We moved up with Dr Browns right about 3 months. She was starting to fuss at the end of every bottle, push it out then grab for it again. She was also not finishing the last oz or so cause she was getting frustrated with it. The minute we switched she was happy and not fussing anymore. I'd wait till your LO is showing signs of frustration at the bottle, then introduce the new size. Good luck!

This was us with DS too.  Try it, if it doesn't work, wait a week and try again.

  • We switched to the level 2 around 3 months, and she is still using it.
  • We tried moving to #2 last week, but LO was spitting up a lot after he ate so we moved back to the #1.  Will probably try again this weekend since he is showing some signs of frustration with the #1 nipple.
  • We switched to #2 when he was sucking so hard on the #1 that it was popping out of his mouth.  We used the #1s still at night for a few weeks, because he was sleepy and couldn't really concentrate.  It took a few weeks, but it made things much better.

This is exactly what our DD is doing. I think I'll give it a try today!

Let me know how it goes.  I am curious.  I dont think DD has really acted frustrated with the 1st nipple size yet, but it just takes sometimes an entire hour to finish one bottle and at night...that is frustrating for me.

  • We never switched them with Gav. He never had problems.

  • The pedi told me there was no need to change nipples. She said when we breastfeed, our nipples don't change, the baby just learns to suck harder, so that it should be the same with bottle nipples.

Same here! I didn't think this could be the problem but I'll try the next level - we already bought them, just haven't used them. Thanks!

  • I switched my DD to #2 nipples at 1 1/2 months.  She was collapsing the nipple, getting frustrated and not finishing bottles, and taking ages to eat.  She's nearly 4 months now and still perfectly happy with size #2. 1HT
  • We have been trying to step R up to size 2 since he was about a month old because he takes soooo long to eat. However, he chokes on it still at over 4 months old, so we have pretty much given up on him ever using size 2's.

So we just get comfortable, play some angry birds, and hang out for the 35 minutes it takes to feed him.

  • We're still using Level 1.  We tried to switch when DD moved up to the 9 oz bottles from the 5 oz, but she kept choking and spitting up.  She seems fine using Level 1 and still finishes her bottles pretty quickly.

Note: DD is only in the 10th percentile for weight, so she's pretty tiny.

  • I've just started making the switch, but i only feed him 2 bottles a day with the #2 nipple. He's starting to get used to it. So i'll be gradually introducing more everyday.

To update you on moving DD up to Level 2 nipples: she downed 5 oz of formula in a record 5 minutes and didn't choke or spit up. I can't believe we didn't switch her sooner! It's going to make her feedings so much easier!!!

Just try it, you might be pleasantly surprised like we were!

WOW!  That is amazing!! I will have to try it!
