Re: open door at night??

  • We close DD's door - mostly to keep the animals and sound out.  She knows how to open it though.  When she wakes up she just comes to us.

We also still have a monitor.

We keep A's door closed for several reasons:

    1. It is safer in the event of a fire.

    2. We don't want the pets in his room.

    3. Our bedrooms are on the second floor, and while we have a gate at the top of the stairs, DH is not 100% reliable in remembering to close when he goes to bed.

We have a video monitor.  Obviously when he gets to an age where he can get up and go potty on his own, we will either open the door or teach him how to open and close it.

All this and plus their rooms are the coldest so keeping the door closed helps the room stay warmer.

And our door is closed as well.

  • We keep it open because it creaks and the slightest noise will wake him up.  Also, due to our foundation shifting we can't close the dang thing anymore. Which sucks because we adjusted the door frame to his room while I was PG because it wouldn't close then and now we're having the same problem.

Also, in the event that power goes out or something and the monitors are off, I don't think I'd hear DS if his door was shut.  His room is on the other side of the house.

  • H opens the door himself so there is a babygate on his door. When he wakes up he comes and opens the door and says hi or something like that.We were in our old house with master down stairs and other rooms up. If the house wasn't going on the market, we'd just gate the stairs. Our home was kid friendly, but we didn't want holes in the wall or an attached gate that could detract from the house.

In this apartment, he has the gate b/c the kitchen isn't possible to close off.

in the house we are looing at, we'd just gate the stairs.

We don't have a monitor here, but keep our door open and he lets me know when he's up.

Once he's doing potty we will reassess where we are living and what needs protecting.

  • No we keep it closed for both girls. We have a monitor for Baby N. A is old enough that she will call for us or come get us if she needs us.  We have a monitor in Baby N's room.  I don't like open doors personally - for no real good reason other than it feels like they should be closed.
  • We've always closed it. Have a monitor but can still hear her across the house if she starts crying. DD's still in a crib but once she's in a toddler bed, she knows how to open the door thanks to having lever door knobs Tongue Tied.

  • We've keep it closed for both kids.  Same as pp, sound (we have a smaller, 1 story house so it would be too loud if we didn't), cats, and fire safety.  We have a monitor with Ryan but not with Megan - she quite good at being heard when she wants to ;-)
  • Closed for pets and sound.  Now that she's in her toddler bed, she opens it up and comes to get us or just yells out that she needs help, and we go in there.

We're in a one-story house now, but if we were still in our 2-story house when she switched to a toddler bed, we would have gated the stairs.

We keep DD's door open for the same reason. If something went wrong with the monitors, she would have to be screaming bloody murder for us to hear her through two closed doors (ours and hers) and across the house.

We sleep with both our and her bedroom doors open so that she wouldn't have to scream quite as loudly in the event of a monitor failure.
