Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Having trouble taking in enough calories...

My ticker's wrong, LO is almost 12 weeks and I'm thinking you ladies might have more advice on this than those with NBs.

I never thought I'd say this, because I've always loved to eat... but I think I'm having trouble taking in enough calories to sustain my BM supply. I ate healthily during my PG and stayed very active, although I did overeat toward the end, but I didn't care. I gained almost 60 pounds, much of it water, which is very normal in my family. All the women are of average, fit build and gain a lot during pregnancy, but all have BF'd and lost it easily. I've already lost all but 15 pounds.

Since having the baby, I've had no appetite, which is very unlike me. Initially I wondered if it was my body's way of spurring weight loss. I actually have to force myself to eat. It's a horrible feeling, like I'm going to be sick if I take another bite, but I know that I have to eat. On top of that, with the baby, I tend to forget and time flies. Normally it wouldn't be problem because I'd get hungry and therefore remember, but I never feel hunger anymore. On a couple days I had water and a cup of coffee and before I knew it, it was 2pm and I hadn't eaten yet, nor did I want to.

I had an awesome supply when people were around after DD was born and I was making meals, but now that I'm on my own (my DH is often out to sea), if I'm not careful, I'm only really eating one big meal and a few light snacks during the day. My supply has tanked a few times, and as soon as I really increased my food intake, my supply went up again. LO seemed to be getting enough, although she was eating more frequently when my supply dwindled. Has anyone else had a lack of appetite after delivering? I'm trying hard to eat something for every meal and to eat nutritiously and drink fruit smoothies, etc. I just never thought I'd struggle to take in enough calories. I always heard BFing women talk about how hungry they were and how awesome it was to eat everything in sight without weight gain! I never thought I'd be unhappily force-feeding myself.

  • My appetite dropped off a lot too.  I'm actually 10lbs below the weight I was when I got pregnant with DD, which is pretty significant since I'm only 5'4 and was slim to begin with.  In the beginning it was because I had a rough delivery and was in too much pain to bother getting up and eating so unless someone made me something, it just didn't happen.  Lately I'm not sure why eating bugs me...I think it's just stress though.  DH is out of town more than he's home with this new job of his and I've always had trouble eating when stressed.  The only thing I've found that works for me is to graze throughout the day...little snacks here and there rather than trying to down a big meal.  Make sure you keep up with your vitamins too.

  • I didn't have an appetite until like 3 months.  And then it hit me with a vengeance.  I was NEVER this hungry when I was pregnant.  You know its bad when you eat more than your husband!

  • It's so hard to find time to eat. I have a 3 month old and a 3 year ok'd and I find that most days I don't eat until noon. I do wake up hungry but I am just so busy getting my toddler food, pumping, feeding LO, cleaning, getting DS to Nd from playschool that I just don't have time as bad as it sounds. I feel hungry on and off throughout the morning but I always say i'll eat in 10 mins when I'm done whatever I'm doing but something else always comes up. I hasn't seemed to have affected my supply too much but I am supplementing so it's not a huge deal. It's really hard and I have no advice but you're not alone!

This! I was just like you with never eating during the day, but then one day I was soooo hungry, and it just continued. Your body will come around and you'll want to eat again!

  • I am so, so, so sick of eating.  This started while I was pregnant and has continued now that I am breastfeeding.  I work from 9-5 so it's a little easier for me to plan lunch and snacks throughout the day.  When I was home on leave, it was difficult to make sure that I ate enough throughout the day.  The only thing I can suggest is to get yourself on a schedule.  This will ensure that you'll get enough calories to sustain your milk supply. You can eat healthy, small meals like yogurt and fruit, oatmeal, cereal, bagel, sandwiches and then have a big meal for dinner.  I snack on fruit, nutragrain bars, nature valley granola bars, and cookies (no, i don't care about how unhealthy they are-LOL!).  I also drink a TON of water.
