Crib bumpers?

Will you guys be using bumpers in your crib?

Current moms (or those that have researched) what are the benefits of having them? Is there a reason we need them?

They're cute, but even if they raise SIDS risk .01% DH said he doesn't want them if there's no safety reason for having them. So I'm curious if there is?

We're planning to just buy sheets and possibly a cribskirt (or make one myself), so we don't have to spend $200+ on a bedding set when we won't use bumpers or the comforter.

Re: Crib bumpers?

  • Our set came with one, so we used it. But I think it's added protection, DS is a wild sleeper. I really feel like if we didnt have that while he was in the crip he would have hit his head a lot on the crib and probably gotten and arm or leg stuck inbetween the rails.

  • I have heard some moms say that without them the babies sometimes get their limbs caught in the bars, not that they break any bones when this happens, but that the babies get upset and start screaming. I am not sure if I will use them or not, but they make breathable bumpers that are thin to reduce the suffocation risk, but still block arms and legs from making their way through. You can find them at BRU.
  • We used one for 3 weeks.  We got so tired of dealing with the stupid thing tha we threw it in the trash after 3 weeks.  We were changing the sheets so often we got tired of dealing with it.  I would skip it, but that's just me.  DS never had a problem getting anything caught in the crib.

  • We used bumpers, but we had to stop because DS was using them to climb on and I worried about him falling out of his crib

I agree, bedding sets are a waste of $$.  Buying a set was definitely part of my crazy hormonal nesting spaz attack  lol

  • They do have breathable bumpers. I know there on amazon not sure about target, or bru. They are wonderful they have velcro which makes for easy changing of sheets and protect lo from limps hanging out:)
  • I think we won't use them until baby is moving around more.  When they are newborns they aren't rolling around so it won't be needed.  Plus as time goes on the risk of SIDS decreases and I figure the baby will be moving more and be able to move his or head around.  But, I'll see, if we don't need them we won't use them.
  • I did not use one with DD, nor will I use one with this baby.  There is no safety reason to have one, in fact, quite the opposite.  My kid might have got an arm or a leg stuck once or twice, but there was no lasting injury by any means.  If it had have been a common happening, I would have considered a breathable bumper, but never a traditional bumper.  They absolutely are not recommended, and personally, I think it's my job to reduce all risks, especially ones that are completely unnecessary and frivolous.   For me, that meant making her sleep environment as safe as possible, with no bumper, nothing in her crib, used a sleepsack, fan in her room, wrapping her mattress (at the very least, please let the crib mattress off-gas for several weeks), sleep on back, etc.

I bought my DD's bedding (ie. crib sheet and skirt) a la carte at BombayKids (now defunct)  but Pottery barn sells some cute separates, as does Target.  I'm thinking about having a crib skirt made on Etsy for this one.  I'm actually not a big fan of the traditional crib sets anyhow, maybe b/c I just see them as a variety of unsafe items...there really should not be a bumper or a blanket in baby's crib.

  • We got our bedding set at our baby shower and was happy to have the bumpers once Emily was "mobile" and moving around a lot in her sleep/naps in her crib, which was at 5 months old.  She would have hit her head numerous times and actually did get her leg stuck up to her knee at 2 1/2 years old the week I didn't put the bumpers back in because I was redecorating and hadn't purchased a new set.  It doesn't happen to all kids and you can't predict what will happen... I guess I always just felt safe was better than sorry.  :)  You could always get a breathable bumper for $15 at BRU/Target!

We didn't actually move her into her crib until she grew out of sleeping in her vibrating chair/swing/bassinet in our room at 4 months so, we never had a worry of her suffocating in the bumpers.  Anytime she found herself up against them, she could roll over and/or turn her head.

  • We didn't use one at first and then DD kept getting her arms and legs stuck. Nothing that would actually hurt her, but she would get very mad. We added the bumper to stop the limps from sticking out. There are many of the "breathable" mesh bumpers. We will probably start without the bumper again and see if this LO is a crazy sleeper.
  • I don't think I'll buy any of that stuff- I think I'll stick with sheets.  I'll buy a breathable bumper if for some reason the baby is prone to getting legs/arms caught in there.

  • I used them with both babies until they were old enough to roll. It would keep light out of their face when I would check on them (light from the other rooms in the house), but I won't be using it for #3. Right about the time I took it out of DD's crib, a co-worker's baby rolled onto a pillow and stopped breathing. Luckily, they got her to a hospital in time and she's fine, but it scared me to death. She is just now using a light, light blanket over her legs only (she's 20 months). Better to be safe, IMO.

  • I didn't use a traditional bumper with DS and will not be using one with this baby either.  The risk just isn't worth it to me. When DS started moving around more we did get a breathable bumper and really liked that, but I wouldn't ever use a traditional bumper.
  • Starting at about 5 months, you will need some kind of bumper.

As a compromise, go with the "breathable" bumper. You definitely don't need it right away though:

  • we used one and will again. Jacob is a wild mover and earlier on when he was mainly only rolling he would slam himself alot on the slats. I took it out when he was able to stand, but im thinking about buying another one cuz he is still slamming his head around in there and he hasnt tried to climb out yet.

  • We used them for some time and found it useful. They stay protected from getting hit. It is safe to use them. I would recommend use of them for some time and see how it works. We later on shifted to using crib sheets. I got some from aBaby.com. They are very soft and really durable. Check their collection at their website.
  • We use the breathable bumper and have really liked it.
