Have your feelings re: CIO changed since having 2U2?

Hi Ladies. So I'm just wondering if anyone's opinion toward CIO has changed since they faced life with 2U2? My DD is only about 11 weeks and today I decided to try letting her CIO for naps. I never thought I would do it this early, but since she still requires so many naps a day this puts me in the room rocking her to sleep at least 5 times a day for about 20 minutes each time leaving my toddler to the rest of the house. I cannot stick him in his crib everytime I have to get his sister down. I don't think that's fair. Besides, I've noticed that sometimes the more I rock her the longer it takes for her to fall asleep and she wakes the second she hits the mattress and ends up crying anyway! Ugh. The whole process has me stressed out all day everyday. Obviously I'm not talking about CIO for middle of the night feedings or anything, but during the day when you know they're fed, clean, and due for a sleep then what?? I hope I'm not the only one, but regardless this seems to be my only solution right now. She cries for about 2-5 minutes and then is out. Tell me I'm not the only one!?!

  • So far I haven't had any problems with #2 taking naps, but I don't think you're the only one.  As long as you're not leaving her in there for a half hour wailing and you know she's got everything she needs, I don't think you're doing anything wrong.  I'm also pretty sure she won't become a felon because of it.

  • Ds2 gets fussy when he gets tired so I know he's due for a nap. I swaddle him tight, make sure he doesn't want anymore milk, give him his paci and sometimes walk around the house with him but then I put him in his swing where I can see him. If he looses his paci, I pop it back in. Sometimes he squirms all around but never really cries. Does your dd like the swing? I wouldn't say ds2 loves it but he does fall asleep eventually. I guess I'm probably comfortable with CIO at 6 months. I'm not sure what I'll do before then and if he is too big for the swing. I think I'll probably swaddle and rock in the same room as ds1 but just play white noise from my phone.

  • I think there's a difference between 2-5 minute of fussing and outright screaming CIO.  I still didn't do any hardcore training until closer to 8 months, with a little "fuss it out" starting after the recommended 6 months.

It's really tricky w/ two!!  I'm really hoping we're over the hump after a couple rough nights w/ the night training- that sucked!

  • No, it didn't change my feelings on CIO.  I still feel it's only appropriate for older babies.  If anything we had a harder time letting DD CIO (which we did at 9 months when she was still waking 2-3 times a night, ugh).

BUT - I don't consider what you are doing to be CIO!  DD definitely had to fuss and cry a little more often during the day than DS ever did because you're right - you can't drop the toddler the second the baby fusses.  So yes, sometimes DD would be in her crib crying or fussing for a few minutes while I settled DS/changed DS/whatever.  Sometimes she'd go to sleep, other times I'd run out of DS's room when I had him content and into DD's room to help her settle down.

Yes, exactly.  This is what I find myself doing.  So maybe it's not full blown CIO which I would never do at this age (2-5 minutes tops then check and console or whatever is needed).  Still feels weird to let a baby fuss/cry since I never let DS do it at that age...

  • CIO during the day didn't work for us until DD was about 6 months old. It worked at 8 weeks for nighttime. We used Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and it says daytime sleep doesn't really get organized until about 4 months or so anyway, so it might be a losing battle. I'm going to plan on babywearing alot during the first few months during the day.
