Tips to get LO to drink water

I feel like he's not drinking enough.  He has milk with breakfast, lunch & dinner - about 15-20oz total.  I give him water in between, and he'll take a sip here & there, but never finishes a full sippy all day.

He's still having wet diapers, but not as many as he used to.  Sometimes I'll change him when he wakes up in the morning, and it'll be 3 or 4 hours before he pees.

Any advice on how to get him to drink more water?  Should I offer water with b,l & d and do milk in between instead?

Re: Tips to get LO to drink water

  • My DS is a milk addict, so water was tough for us.  He will drink occasionaly, but just like you, never a full cup.

He lately likes to drink out of our glasses with a straw.  So we keep a plastic "big boy" glass on the coffee table with a straw and he now finishes that during the course of the day.

Since he has been drinking out of our glasses, he has also grown to prefer ice water, so that might be another thing to try.

  • DS wouldn't drink straight water either for a long time.  I started with a 50/50 mix of juice and water at first and gradually increased the water while decreasing the juice.  Now were at 90% water.  I'd keep the milk to b, l & d.
  • I added ice to Alex's water and that seemed to have helped him drink more. Not sure if the ice gave him something to get excited about but its seemed to help.

we have been doing this as well.

  • DS gets water at his morning & afternoon snack and always a sippy with water available to him while he plays. He typically will drink one sippy cup full of water a day. Some days he may only drink an ounce some days it's 2 sippy cups of water it all depends.

  • We taught DD how to cheers to make her drink more.
  • DS likes his water cold from the fridge or with ice.  He probably only drinks about 1 sippy cup of water total per day.  If water is available all day, your child will drink when he is thirsty.  Keep giving milk with meals.  Food has water in it, too.  Unless your child is constipated, there is probably no need to worry about how much water he drinks.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
