December 2010 Moms

Charlie and his poor boy parts. :(

While he was in the NICU, Charlie was diagnosed with Hypospadias when they attempted to circumcise him. Basically, hypospadias is a combination of three things - abnormal placement of the urethra (instead of one centered pee hole, he has three small ones), curvature of the penis, and misplaced fore skin (its all bunched on top instead of all around). His little solider is all jacked up. You can hardly notice, to be honest, but if its not corrected, it could become worse and trying to potty train a little boy when nothing is lined up sounds impossible.

Anyway, my little man needs to have surgery to fix it in May. The procedure is really simple and not a big deal. What scares me is having my then six month old under anesthesia. Scary stuff.

Out of curiosity, has anyone else with a little boy run into this problem? Apparently, its pretty common (about 1 in 500), but I had never heard of it before.

  • I'm sorry to hear this OSC, I've never heard of this or anyone who's had it.  I know it must be really scary to think of him being put under anesthesia but I'm sure they wouldn't do it if it wasn't safe.  Poor little stinker :-(

  • I have not run into this problem with my boys but my 2 1/2 year old had surgery at 6 weeks. It was so hard on me to put him in someone elses arms and see them walk away with him. It is really amazing how quickly they bounce back after surgery. He will do amazing. I am sure it will be harder on you than it will be on him. Good luck!

That's really good to hear. Its just an outpatient thing, but he'll be fully under. Yikes. Sad

  • Yes!  I had never heard of it either until Ethan was diagnosed with epispadias, which is basically the same except instead of the hole being centered in the tip, his is on the top of the head of his penis.  We also have to have surgery to correct and attempt to cicumcise when he is 6 months old.  I am also having the same fears!  Even though the problem is fairly common and needs to be corrected, its terrifying to know he is going to be under anesthesia when he is so little!  I've never had surgery so the thought of a 6 month old having surgery is terrifying!
  • I'm peaking from the April 2011 board, but my son was born with hypospadias as well.  We had never even heard of it.  His pedi urologist was great.  He had surgery to correct his at 7 months old.  The surgery went fine.  But it was rough on us.  It was hard when he came out of the anthesia (sp?), because he was just so upset and didn't know what was going on.  The look of his penis was rough, but it healed well.  I just didn't know what to expect.  Be sure you discuss all your concerns with the doctor.  That will help too.

  • My husband either has this or something like this.  He was born with his "hole" on the underside of the head of his penis instead of the tip.  When he was the same age, they cut a slit from the hole up to where it should be, basically giving him a bigger hole to urinate/ejaculate from.  (This runs in his family) Had he not had it done, he probably wouldn't have been able to have kids, which is what convinced his mom and dad that he definitely needed the procedure done.  We had no problems getting pregnant with it (it was actually my body that took longer to work-it took me 7 months to get everything back in order after stopping birth control.)  The only odd thing he has to deal with is he is not able to stand to pee, unless it's at a urinal, because it has quite a spray on it!  But it hasn't been an issue since he uses urinals in public and at home, we don't care if he sits on a toilet.  And I've never had to complain about the toilet seat being up!  I have a degree in public health and believe me, when I took my glorified sex ed courses, I found out this is an extremely common defect in little boys.  He isn't alone. :)  Here's a website that tells more about what he has:

Don't worry about anything.  I know that's easier said than done, but he's going to be just fine!

He was fully under and had to stay in the hospital about 24 hours and like I said, I was amazed at how well he did. I on the other hand was a basket case. The hardest part was that he couldn't eat for those 24 hours and it was really hard to soothe him while he was so hungry.

I've never had any kind of surgery either, so I don't even know what its like to be put under. I know that babies bounce back pretty well, but it'll still be interesting. When May rolls around, I'll let you know how it turns out! lol

  • I have a friend (actually a friend of a friend) who had a boy with this!  he also was born with 6 fingers on each hand and 6 toes on each foot.  I believe the fingers he had fixed very shortly after birth but the "weewee" and the toes he had surgery for around 6 months.  the mom was super scared and nervous, but everything turned out totally fine!!

  • I do have a friend from my mom's group whose son just recently had surgery to correct a few of the problems you listed. He is now 4. He was sore for about a day but is doing great now!

  • My boss' son had some problems down there as well. (I was a nanny for 5 years.) She said that it could have long term effects if they didn't get it fixed, like it could be harder for him to have children and such.
  • Yes, my husband's cousin's baby was born with this disorder.  He also had the procedure and is doing just fine now :)

  • OSC, I'm sorry the little pumpkin has to have surgery when he's so tiny....Sad

One of my friends has 3 little boys, 2 of which have the same thing as Charlie.  They both had surgery to correct it and were fine immediately afterwards and neither have any issues to date.

  • Poor Charlie!  I can understand why you'd be so apprehensive about having him put under.  That would freak me out too.  But it seems like it's a common problem and a common procedure.

  • Aww sorry Charlie has to undergo surgery!! I don't know of anyone who has the same issue but my friend's little boy was born with a cleft lip and he's had 3-4 surgeries within the first year to correct it.
