making dinner! Its not the cooking that bothers me-its having to always come up with ideas..and to come up with new things...Being a SAHM DH doesnt like when I ask him for input.
I hear you! Its impossible here. DH works midnight shift 3 days a week. He is a hard core meat eater and I have been a vegetarian for 17 years. DS1 is allergic to citrus and all dairy and DS 2 is super picky and wont eat any meat except fishsticks and no vegetables. Coming up with something we all like is almost impossible and it makes for a horrible grocery bill! Sorry I am no help! I do love All recipies.com though! Just found an awesome potato cheese soup on there and made it in the crock pot. DH and I both actually liked it!
I keep a running list of things from the very basics to more complex things. Every week I pick from the list and make sure we have all the ingredients to make everything.
I'm also a fan of cooking once, using twice. I'll grill chicken one night with salad, veggie, rice, and then using the leftover chicken the next night for chix quesadillas. Or making meatballs one night and have spaghetti and meatballs. And then taking the leftover meatballs and turning them into sweedish meatballs over egg noodles.
I recommend Cooking Light mag - I always get new ideas from it. There are also a few websites that offer weekly menu lists (Moms4moms I think is one I used to use). I use AllRecipes.com every week to plan the menu. I use their recipe box and rate the recipes we like.
We typically stick to the same types of food each day. So Sunday is roast or crockpot chicken/beef, Monday is leftovers w/ salad, Tuesday is grill (alternative meat to what we had Sun/Mon), Wed is pasta/italian, Thurs is leftovers or takeout w/ homemade dessert, Fri is fish, Sat is casserole or we go out. Having this plan makes menu planning easier because I just search AllRecipes for the main ingredient and go with whatever gets good reviews.
Do you plan your meals for the week or try to decide every night? I know on weeks when I don't plan my meals and I'm staring at the fridge/pantry/freezer at 4pm, I hate it and I make crap for meals. When I plan my meals for the week (even if I don't stick to it exactly), we eat healthier and I don't mind cooking. I try to plan them on Sunday and ask everyone (DH and the girls) for input. If DH or anyone doesn't have any ideas, they aren't allowed to complain about what I pick. It's not perfect, but it works.
For ideas, I like the allrecipes.com site. The What's for Dinner and the All Home Cooking blogs is another good one for ideas and recipes.
