Hey ladies, new here and trying to figure things out.
I am interested in using cloth for our baby, but DH isn't completely sold on the idea. I think he thinks it will be too much work. I have gotten him to consent to at least "try it out."
So, as far as trying it out, I think that the Jillian's Drawer's trial would be a good fit, so we can decide if it's really for us or not. However, if we really are going to CD, I feel like we need to start stockpiling now, to spread out some of the up front cost. I would also like to be able to register for some CDs for our shower.
What do you think? Should I plan on getting some pre-folds and covers, and then use the trial to see if we like any of the fitteds or AIOs? Or should we just wait?
Re: Jillian's Drawer's trial vs. beginning a stockpile
Personally, I made up my mind from the very beginning that we were going to CD. Once I started buying I never even considered going to disposables. My husband was hesitant at first, but he actually likes them over disposables now.
I would at the very least, go ahead and get your newborn prefolds, snappis, KL0's if you are going to use those and covers. The AIOs, pockets, etc. probably won't fit your LO until he/she is 10-12 pounds, unless you buy perfect sized diapers. During my pregnancy I ordered several different brands, BG, FB, SmartiPants and RaR. Once LO was in the diapers I figured out which ones work best and ordered more of them. I like having a versatile stash.
If you are having doubts that you will stick to CDing, I would go with the trial. You could also start putting X amount of dollars away each paycheck or month and don't touch it until you are ready to buy your diaper stash.
We just started CDing, so I don't have a lot of expertise to offer, but I thought I'd share what I've heard.
When we started investigating people told us that newborns don't usually fit into cloth diapers very well because they are too tiny. They also said the first few bowel movements a baby has can sometimes cause staining of the diapers.
We did the trial thing. It was nice to hold the diapers in our hands, be able to try them out and feel like we could really use them without risk of buying something and then not liking them. You have to pay the $10, plus shipping fees but otherwise it worked really well.
