Will you guys be using bumpers in your crib?
Current moms (or those that have researched) what are the benefits of having them? Is there a reason we need them?
They're cute, but even if they raise SIDS risk .01% DH said he doesn't want them if there's no safety reason for having them. So I'm curious if there is?
We're planning to just buy sheets and possibly a cribskirt (or make one myself), so we don't have to spend $200+ on a bedding set when we won't use bumpers or the comforter.

We used bumpers, but we had to stop because DS was using them to climb on and I worried about him falling out of his crib
I agree, bedding sets are a waste of $$. Buying a set was definitely part of my crazy hormonal nesting spaz attack lol
I did not use one with DD, nor will I use one with this baby. There is no safety reason to have one, in fact, quite the opposite. My kid might have got an arm or a leg stuck once or twice, but there was no lasting injury by any means. If it had have been a common happening, I would have considered a breathable bumper, but never a traditional bumper. They absolutely are not recommended, and personally, I think it's my job to reduce all risks, especially ones that are completely unnecessary and frivolous. For me, that meant making her sleep environment as safe as possible, with no bumper, nothing in her crib, used a sleepsack, fan in her room, wrapping her mattress (at the very least, please let the crib mattress off-gas for several weeks), sleep on back, etc.
I bought my DD's bedding (ie. crib sheet and skirt) a la carte at BombayKids (now defunct) but Pottery barn sells some cute separates, as does Target. I'm thinking about having a crib skirt made on Etsy for this one. I'm actually not a big fan of the traditional crib sets anyhow, maybe b/c I just see them as a variety of unsafe items...there really should not be a bumper or a blanket in baby's crib.
We got our bedding set at our baby shower and was happy to have the bumpers once Emily was "mobile" and moving around a lot in her sleep/naps in her crib, which was at 5 months old. She would have hit her head numerous times and actually did get her leg stuck up to her knee at 2 1/2 years old the week I didn't put the bumpers back in because I was redecorating and hadn't purchased a new set. It doesn't happen to all kids and you can't predict what will happen... I guess I always just felt safe was better than sorry.
You could always get a breathable bumper for $15 at BRU/Target!
We didn't actually move her into her crib until she grew out of sleeping in her vibrating chair/swing/bassinet in our room at 4 months so, we never had a worry of her suffocating in the bumpers. Anytime she found herself up against them, she could roll over and/or turn her head.

Starting at about 5 months, you will need some kind of bumper.
As a compromise, go with the "breathable" bumper. You definitely don't need it right away though:
