Insurance?

For your LO's first 1-1.5 years, do you need dental and vision insurance? We have gotten it thus far but with no teeth yet and the free vision checkup for infants, I'm not sure if it's good to have "to be safe" or just a waste of $ because babies don't need it anyway?

Re: Insurance?

  • I think dental and vision are included for us.  My friend is a dentist (orthodontist, actually) and she said to take them to a pedodontist around age 1 to get them familiar with the office.  Plus, a pedodontist can let you know how much fluoride baby needs.

Even though B doesn't have teeth yet, I'm sure he will by 1 year!  Or soon thereafter.  He may just sprout them all at once.  I just noticed Kaya's 4th tooth today!

  • As of now, we don't plan on getting either dental or vision insurance at all, ever.  After researching private dental insurance for myself a few years ago, I determined that it is not worth the cost of the premium for what it covers.  Now I get both dental and vision for myself at work, but only for me, not the family (medical is for everyone).  When MH goes to the dentist or buys new glasses we just pay out of pocket.  We plan to do the same for Henry, unless something changes or we hear about some awesome new plan that seems worth the monthly premium.

  • We've just had this discussion in our house and have decided it is cheaper to pay out-of-pocket with our FSA for Libby's first dental and eye check-ups rather than enroll her onto my insurance (which would be $58/mo. to add dental and vision).

Oh, I didn't know there was such a thing as a pedodontist! First I heard of it =P Good to know!

Yeah, I was leaning a bit more towards yes for dental but on the fence for vision...hmmm...decisions decisions...thanks for all your input ladies =) it's good to know what others are doing. I'll have to do more calculations to see if it's really worth the premiums vs paying out of pocket.

  • Note also that they will do very basic vision screenings when your child is in school.  I think ours are every year or maybe every other year.  Like I said, they are basic but can give an early head's up if they believe they see any issues.

My daughter also had a basic vision exam at her doctor's office for her last regular medical check up.

  • yeah i'd figure out where you'd be going and call and find out what your OOP costs would be.

some kids don't go to the dentist until they are 2 or 3 but it's recommended that they go as soon as they have teeth.  DH also learned in school that as soon as they have teeth you should get flouride varnish applied to the teeth so we are going to get some in a few weeks when we go to visit my family since my brother is a dentist :) we'll just apply it at home ourselves since she only has 2 teeth right now :P

we didn't get vision coverage either. i think at this age we don't foresee any problems...and the infantsee program covers your initial exam
