We used one for the first couple of months, but you will need two eventually. I can't imagine my almost 2 year olds still sharing a crib. They'd kill each other, either on accident or on purpose.
2. Our twins have never shared a crib. Perhaps if they hadn't been separate in NICU we would have co-slept them for a short time but we never bothered. Regardless, you'll want 2 cribs IMO. Whether your twins co-sleep or not there will come a time when they won't fit in the same crib without waking/hitting/knocking into the other but they'll be too small/young to go into a "big kid" bed.
You will definitely need 2 cribs long-term. We had our girls share a crib for the first few weeks (in our bedroom), but they each moved to their own crib in their bedroom once they started scooting around.

we started out with two.. the risk of SIDS just isn't worth it IMO even though when they are newborns they really dont move much- we knew we would need two so thats just what we started out with.

This! And there are some safety concerns about infant twins sharing a bed (though the research is based on siblings of different ages so there's some disagreement about whether it applies to multiples) so I would do some research before deciding on whether to have them share at all. If you do, definitely make sure there's nothing else in the crib, avoid bumpers b/c that can cut down the air circulation, make sure they're not close enough to be re-breathing each other's air and that they can't roll into each other to interfere with each other's breathing.
My twins shared until 6m (when we stopped swaddling) but I wouldn't have let them share past the age we finished swaddling, whenever that happened.
Mine barely lasted a week crib sharing...somehow they managed to scoot themselves into each others space pretty much from the get go...I would have 2 set up and ready to go (even tho you may be able to get away with one for a while - you aren't going to want to put together a crib on barely 2 hours of sleep with 2 screaming babies in the background...trust me )

We bought two at the same time but only set up one at the beginning. DDs shared it until they were about 7 months old then we set up the second crib.

Thank you for all of the insight, ladies! You have given me lots to consider. Sounds like personalities and sleep habits play a major role in what works.
You will need two eventually, so you may as well start out with them. The staff at our special care nursery (where both babies had brief stays) strongly advised us NOT to co-bed them due to the risk of SIDS. We did have them in a PnP in our room for all of 3 days until we woke to DD kicking DS in the face, she had somehow turned herself sideways and she was swaddled. From then on they each slept in their own crib.
My twins aren't even 3 months yet and they wouldn't fit in a single crib. I have to keep 1 end elevated for reflux so there's no room for 2. Plus they move a lot.
I used one crib till my twins were 5-6 months, then it was just unsafe..he was so much bigger then her and I worried he would roll on her during sleeping.

Thanks for this question as we were wondering the same thing, also what about bassinets? Does everyone think they are necessary and did you have two of those also? What about the cribs that can change into a toddler bed, etc. are they a good idea?
We used two from the beginning, and I'm glad we did. Even if we wanted our boys to sleep in the same crib, THEY didn't want to and they slept much better when in separate cribs. Plus like everyone else said, you need two eventually anyway.
You will eventually need two cribs and depending on how they sleep etc. you won't know eactly when you will want the second one. So, IMO you should just set up two before they are born and that way they are ready. I would not have wanted to deal with setting up a second crib when the babies were little and ceratinly not have wanted to deal with buying another at that time either. GL!

This. I've never heard of anyone sharing the entire time.....seems impossible!
