Finally adding a word to our reperitoire - "more". She now has four words. None of which are clear, but I'll take it!
How do those of you who let their LO's feed themselves do it? Holy crap! I just let Sydney feed herself tapioca pudding after her lunch and, even though she did awesome for a first attempt, it was so messy! I guess it's time to get over my OCD. But maybe just at dinner-time when I know she will be getting a bath right after!
Re: Feeding herself and "more".
Sydney is pretty good with her hands too. I can't imagine when we'll be ready for a fork! LOL.
sabrina's been self feeding for two months now... but NOT when it comes to liquidy stuff like yogurt and applesauce. then i intervene and hold (and usually wrestle) the spoon.
last night i gave her some corkscrew cheese noodles which she had no problem picking up with her hands but i'm trying to at least get her in the habit of *seeing* a spoon in the hopes that she may use it one day so i put a noodle on the spoon and left the spoon for her to use. she did. once. then the next time she took the noodle off the spoon.
i put another noodle on the spoon. she took the noodle off the spoon, picked up the spoon, and tossed it onto the floor.

We mostly rely on finger foods and avoid using spoon foods as major meal components.
Anything she can eat with her hands, we just let her go to town.
For things that require a utensil, we give her very small quantities to minimize spillage. She has figured out that she needs to put the spoon in the soup/yogurt/applesauce/whatever and lift it to her mouth, but she hasn't yet figured out that the spoon needs to remain upright. She usually turns it sideways on the way to her mouth. Sometimes DH or I will take over the spoon so that she gets some in to her mouth. In that case, she usually wants to "help", so we concentrate on not letting her pull the spoon away from us.

This - S has a spoon that she gets to use/hold and then we use a second spoon to feed her. She has the concept to get it in her mouth, but hasn't used it to "scoop" up any food. She still uses her hands. We've started putting liquidy food on her tray (applesauce, mashed potatoes), so she can "paint" the tray with it. I really think it is more for me to start getting used to the mess.
This is what I ended up doing halfway through.
Heather - Let Mikey try it. You might be surprised - like with the cookies!
So you've seen from my sig pics that I DO indeed let Aaron feed himself most things--with the exceptions of yogurt and his cereal in the morning. But as he masters the spoon (I give him a spoon or spork with meals) I'll brave it.
I just don't care if he gets messy or food in his hair. If I'm out (restaurant/at family) I bring a change of clothes in case the food he gets on himself is too much to wipe up.
I figured he's a baby and babies make messes so I should just let him. lol

Lots and lots of patience ... LOL
At first, my OCD got the best of me, but then I was like, meh, he's a baby, he's going to get messy no matter what I do. N can use his fork like a champ, but he still fusses with the spoon, usually getting applesauce or pudding all over his cheeks...but it's too cute!

Good for Sydney!
