if you craft or have a hobby...

When do you find or make time to do it?

Maybe I'm just someone who needs time to do nothing but veg, but I have a hard time figuring out when I'd actually do something crafty (or even read a book for that matter).

So when do you do it? And do you feel you've sacrificed in another area to get it done?

  • This is why I have lots of unfinished projects.  I love to do crafting things and have saved so many ideas.   By the time Luke goes to bed though I just don't feel like doing any of it.

    Exactly.

Ella goes to bed at 7. You'd think that that would mean 3ish hours of productivity...and it does, but that productivity for me means laundry, cleaning/tidying up, uploading pics, seasonal/time-sensitive projects (like holiday cards)...

I'm also in bed by 10 at the latest every night. I can't keep my eyes open any later.

Both of you described my life exactly. I really really want to work out regularly.  I have about a million projects I'd like to work on.  My house is small - how hard can it be to keep it clean?

Haven't worked out in longer than I care to admit, there are *at least* three unfinished projects in my dining room, and my house is a mess.

Part of the problem is that often DH and I eat dinner around 8, which means i don't want to do the dishes and I have less time for "productive" things.

And I read every night before I go to bed, which means that I read about two pages at a time because I start to fall asleep with the book in my hands at about that point.

  • Most of the stuff I do either on breaks at work, while riding in the car (we drive A LOT), or while watching TV with Jake.   Crafting is relaxing to me (most of the time), so it doesn't seem like a chore.

If it's a project I really want to finish, I devote specific time on my calendar for it.  Like today.  I know I have a 1,000 other things to do for work and home, but I took a day of PTO to get uninterrupted work time while Olivia's at daycare.

I'm really guilty of letting other things fall though....our house is a mess right now, I'm a day behind on our regular laundry and I haven't cooked what I would consider to be a good, full meal since last week.

  • Same as all of you. I'm glad Kathy introduced the whole felt shirt idea because it's simple and I can finish it in one sitting (usually in a half hour). I like to cross stitch but it is such an involved process it ends up taking for-ev-er. Hence, why Rowan's stocking is still not finished 2 years after I started it. I wish I knew how some people have the time to do it all it seems!
  • I'm convinced that people who work full-time (or are SAHMs, which of course is more than a full-time job) and still have an intensive hobby just don't sleep as much as they should. :)

If I was willing to stay up until midnight or later every night, I think my house would be a lot cleaner and I'd be able to start knitting again or ::gasp:: read a book!

  • I do some side-by-side when Andrew plays.  I do some when he naps (on weekends only) and some after he goes to bed.
  • I do most crafty things on the weekend because on weeknights I rarely get motivated to do much after Maya goes down at 8 (especially since Shawn and I have started a dorky December tradition of listening to an old time radio Christmas program).  This is unless I am nesting because when that instinct kicks in WATCH OUT because I can't control myself and I will stay up all night to finish something.
  • During Jake's 2 hour naps on the weekends is when I got Lauren's nursery paintings done, her birth announcements, and now the xmas cards.  It is often the highlight of my day, at least in terms of me time!  I clean and shop when Jake is awake, nap time is for stuff I can't do when he is awake.
  • Like Laura, I have a lot of unfinished projects.  However, when I want to finish something I make the time for it, mostly after Tyson is in bed.  It helps that I have a husband that often travels OOT for work so I'm not doing something else instead of spending time with him.

Yeah, I've come to this conclusion too.  I wish I was one of those people who could do fine on 5-6 hours of sleep a night.

  • I too have to choose simple, quick projects.  Even then it doesn't already work out.  Last year I started felt stockings.  I was going to make 6, 3 for us and for the 3 pets.  I got ours doen, but not the pets' so I'm working on those now.  I even bought the stockings pre-made and just needed to add the names and appliques.

It helps if it's something I'm really excited to do.  A couple weekends ago I made stocking hanger to hang on the wall since we don't have a mantle and a christmas card holder.  I was eally into the ideas, so I didn't mind working on them after Isabella went to bed.

  • I usually only do it 2-3 times a week after we put Mady to bed.  We go to bed late though (around 11), so I have some time in the evening to myself.  I usually do it on nights when DH goes down to the basement to work on a project or has the computer.
