I have always heard you are supposed to give the equivalent of one week's salary as a Christmas bonus. We are not that extravagant, partly because we can't afford to be and partly because she would not accept it (she's literally the most selfless human being on the entire planet). Last year we gave her a gift (one of those really nice plush blankets from Restoration Hardware) and made a donation to UNICEF in her name. She loved it.
when I worked as a nanny I got either about 100 cash or gc to a store they knew I liked along with a physical item--photo album, sweater, etc. I miss those days :-)
A week's salary would be too much for me right now. I also gave her an extra $150 the other day because her car got broken into and I felt bad for her. She had trouble accepting it, but finally did with tears in her eyes. So most likely she would be happy with $100 since we did give her some $ already. A photo album or something is a nice idea too. Thanks guys.

do people really tip their child's teacher at Christmas time? I would think that accepting gifts from students would be unethical and not allowed? Interesting.

Last year we gave my SIL (who worked kind of like a nanny share situation for us) a giftcard which equaled one days pay. This year we will give each of DD's teachers a Starbucks giftcard (only $10-$15 each as she has 4 teachers) and DS's daycare person I guess I'll get a giftcard equal to one days pay as well.

I've gotten a check before and it was very awkward. I really wasn't sure what to do and had a hard time accepting it without feeling guilty. I didn't necessarily feel unethical about it, but it was definitely unexpected
