My grandpa woke up at Pearl Harbor to the sound of the attack. 

Maybe this has already been posted, but it has a special place in my heart and I just wanted to remind you today.

    My Great Aunt was a nurse stationed at Pearl Harbor during the attack. She was actually off that day and off the island during the attack. She used to tell stories about how she went back to the base and found a bullet in her desk. The stories she used to tell were awesome.

    Yeah.  Grandpa used to laugh because he was so disoriented from sleep that he just ran out into the airstrip (he was at Hickam field) wearing no helmet, just his boxers, with shrapnel flying all around him.

    Not a scratch on him at the end of the day.

    I actually went to Pearl Harbor a few years ago on a vacation to Hawaii.  It was a very moving experience, and I will never forget it.  It certainly does hold a place in my heart.   After the US officially entered WW2, he was stationed in the Philipines.  When my grandparents were alive, they discussed the war from time to time, and it was interesting to hear where they were when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

    me too.  It was amazing to see...with the oil still leaking from the ships...  My grandpa was also stationed in the phillipines...after the found out he lied to get there (he was only 17) he was assigned to the cook tent for most of his time there...at least that is how he told it...

    I remember the oil leaking out of the Arizona.  There was an older Japanese man who was crying, and he put a small flower into the water.   My mom and I watched him with tears as well.   I'm not exactly sure what my grandfather's rank was.  I'm pretty sure he fought, but I have no idea what his position was.  Maybe they knew each other.
