NBR: Furniture reupholstery

So, last week I asked about slipcovers for our couch. We love the couch itself, we're just not feeling the fabric anymore. We've decided against the slipcovers, and are considering getting the couch reupholstered.

Does anyone have any idea how much that costs? It's an average couch, nothing fancy or different really. I just have no clue--$200? $2000? Obviously if it's too much, we'd just get a new couch. But if there's a potential savings there (since we like the actual couch), we'd like to look into getting it recovered

Anyone have any experience with that? I want to say akspriss did, when I asked about it a long time ago?

TIA!

Re: NBR: Furniture reupholstery

  • I called recently about that question and the place I called said a standard sofa started around $750 to recover, plus the cost of fabric.  They could only give a specific quote if you emailed them a picture of the sofa.  That was in Charlotte though.  From what I found, if you have a really nice sofa (like Hickory Chair or similar) that is really good quality (solid wood frame, etc.), it's probably worth recovering, but if your sofa wasn't that expensive to begin with, it's probably not worth it.  Also depends on what your current budget is and if you can buy a nicer sofa than the one you currently have.  The main reason I was considering it was because I was having trouble finding a fabric that I wanted on a new sofa.  We eventually went to Hickory Furniture Mart and found something there, so we didn't end up having anything reupholstered.  Good luck!

  • The M family we both know had a sofa recovered and it was $800-$1000. I know they were mad because they could have bought a new couch for what they spent. But, it did look nice!

  • hey yep it was me. My DH's great aunt had to move into a more one on one care nursing home and couldn't take all her furniture and she had a couch that was like 2 years old but had like flowers and birds on it (grandma type couch) and we also were given DH's grandparents 1st piece of furnitue they bought 50 years ago (the quality of the chair is still good) and obviously they didnt match and both needed recovering! That was our christmas gift from my inlaws and we used: stacey williams upholstery coats nc and their number is (910) 897-8831. They along with other family memebers had used them and were very happy with the work. We found fabric we loved for really good price out off of New Bern Ave. I think its called discout fabric warehouse...they got a great selection i think had very reasonably priced so i'd check their first. But the total to cover both i think was less then 800 dollars and just make sure you get the fabric well ahead of yoru scheduled date for reupholstery in case they run out of the fabric closer to your date. But just give them a call today and ifu tell them what kind of couch u have they will tell u the price over the phone and u can schedule the appt. and they come and pick up the couhc one week and deliver it back the next wee cuz they are in coats, nc.

  • i would only reupholster if its a nice couch in the first place.

we had one reupholstered (1/2 of the cushions replaced also) for like $700 a few years ago, plus the cost of fabric.
