I've been bitten by the baking bug (say that three times, fast!) and am ready to fire up the oven. I was planning on baking my old standbys but wanted to try something new as well. Those of you that have done the sugar cookie/royal icing thing - is it worth it? Haha. It seems like fun but a LOT of work. Did your cookies look good the first time or did it take quite a bit of practice? I'm just not sure if I possess the required patience

Also, are the cookies tasty? I don't know if I want to do all that work for a bland cookie, ya know?
Re: sugar cookies - royal icing ?s
Man, Kelley. I was hoping you'd be like "heck yeah, they're awesome and so worth it!" I think I'm just going to go ahead and try them out. If they suck, I'll know not make them in the future.
I tried it twice. They turned out pretty well, but did not look as nice as Annie's the first time. (I used the recipe on her blog.) I think it takes practice to get it just right.
The icing recipe she uses tastes kind of yucky (that said I really don't like icing anyways), but it tastes better when it dries. I didn't like how I could taste the dried egg stuff, but I couldn't really taste it on the final product. The cookie recipe she posted (Ella's white sugar cookies) is insanely good though.
Here is a picture of the cookies I made the 2nd time I tried it. The first time my icing was too runny and it ran everywhere. All in all, they taste amazing and I thought they looked fairly cute.
Honestly, I would try it! Though a total PITA, it's fun to see them in the end. Just pick a fairly simple design to start with.
Also, I wish I would have practiced a couple more times before doing Olivia's birthday cookies. You definitely get better the more you do.
sounds super tasty. IMO the almond extract totally made the cookies I made!
My friend Jenny and I have made these on several occassions and I loved doing it! I do NOT belong in the kitchen by any means but even I enjoyed making them.
I can look for the recipe she used as well... if you want. But they were REALLY yummy and between the two of us we made some DARN CUTE cookies. :: rushes off to look for pictures ::
I say give it a shot!
Found Pics! Totally worth the time we put into it! The cookies were a hit. And we had so much fun making them!
Valentine's Day Cookies we made for the office.
Dinosaur cookies - made just for fun!! LoL Jenny made these.
Cookies made for the Jimmy Buffet concert this year. A friend asked her to do these for a party she was having before the concert. So I helped! LoL
I really think they are fun to make! But they do take a lot of time.
I agree with PPs, the almond extract is much tastier, IMO. I use this recipe for the cookies, then the frosting recipe from Annie's.
sugar cookies
cute!!! nice job!
