S/O Space heaters, need advice

I'm glad Em & Bee asked this.  We don't have central heat (old house with a floor furnace), so it gets COLD in Keira's room.  Sometimes in the morning, her feet/hands are like icicles, because her walls are mostly windows.  We've started opening her bedroom door back up when we go to bed, which has helped some, but I was thinking about getting a space heater for her room.

Not sure what to do now.  She sleeps with a down throw, but sometimes she kicks it off.  Any thoughts?  Do they even make the sleep sacks for 2 year olds, I wonder?

  • How about insulated curtains for the windows?  I bet you could make a sleep sack out of some fleece.  You would not even have to hem the edges because it does not ravel.  Just make a big enough Trapazod, scope out the narrower end for the neckline, put velcro where the shoulders woud be and sew up the bottom and up the sides, leaving room for her arms.  You could have all kinds of colors and they make the fleece in all kinds of weights.

Thank you, that is a wonderful idea!!

  • my house is old and drafty - i'm considering spending the money on the honeycomb type shades that help insulate for the bedrooms --- we got them for our front porch and skylight in the bathroom and they have helped a lot.... the kid's rooms really need something to help.

they do make sleep sacks for toddlers- tehy have feet holes and everything- though i just put my boys in XL sleep sacks without the feet holes and they do fine in them (gibby is in 2T).

  • Home Depot sells this saran wrap type thing to seal the windows. You just take a hair dryer and it shrinks up and it totally lessens the draft. We did that last year for Aaron's room, since it has large windows.

When we move next month, we'll do the same to his new room (my old bedroom) since I know from past experience that it gets drafty, as it's the northeast corner of the house (people in the Northeast know about Nor'Easters... Brrr!).

As for sleep sacks... I'm about to get the XL Size (biggest there is) but once he's too big for that (next year?) I'll think of getting the one Goldie described. I saw it in the One Step Ahead catalog --> Blankeaze Wearable Blanket <-- which goes up to 3T. Of course socks would be needed, but it looks cozy.

  • Awesome, thanks ladies! Keira will be getting some large sleep sacks for Christmas, and I am definitely going to make DH buy that sealer stuff for her windows.

So glad I didn't take my parents up on their offer to buy Keira an EdenPure heater for her room last month -- the price is ridiculous anyway ($200) and it would have wasted now that I have learned how unsafe it is to sleep with them on.

  • We put Raquel in long sleave/pants cotton jammies and then put a fleece footed sleeper on over that. She used to wake up like at 4am and would feel cold to the touch...but not anymore!
