We transitioned DD around 2.25 yrs. We wanted to give her a couple of months in her new 'big girl' bed before her brother came along (and didn't want it to look like he was 'stealing' away her crib). We put a side rail on a twin bed and the switch went so much easier than we were expecting.
I transitioned DD at about 22 mos, but more because I needed the crib for DS's imminent arrival and didn't want her associating his arrival with her eviction. For DS, I'm probably looking around 2 or so. He's so tall and already a bit of a climber that I think I will have to transition him sooner than I would prefer due to safety reasons. But I am still thinking I can likely hold out until spring or summer.
We put DS into a toddler bed at 23 months, due to DD arrival the following month. I like a toddler bed, because it had the high sides, so it was similar to a crib. Looks like you'll be doing it sooner than 2, congrats! .

We transitioned our oldest right before our 2nd was born - kind of an accident but he was 22 months old, then two weeks later our 2nd was born. Even though the baby spent 4 months in a bassinet in our room.
We transitioned our 2nd when he was 20 months.. it was right before 3rd was born. This was a bit more planned, but he could not wait to be in a big boy bed like his brother - plus he was a really bad sleeper. While #3 slept in a bassinet in our room for 6 months.
So we did not need the crib for siblings either.
Our 3rd I have no plans to remove from the crib ever!!!! That would mean he could get out of his room on his own.. no way!
Re: cribs to bed?
DD -- 5YO
DS -- 3YO
My son was about 2.
Thanks for this post! We've been struggling with how to handle this w/ DD.
