3rd Trimester

S/O Inducing labour

Is it just me, or does it seem like the amount of women being induced is extremely high?  I understand that there are legitimate, medical reasons for inducing labour... but I find it a bit hard to believe that all of the inductions that are mentioned fall under this category.  As my due date approaches, I feel like a huge chunk of the posts on my birth month board and some on the 3rd tri board are focused on this.

When I talked to my dr. about it (as I'm wanting to avoid induction unless 100% necessary) he said he wouldn't even have brought it up until I was past due, and even then - wouldn't do anything until after 42 weeks.

I don't know, maybe it's a U/O.. but I think that there are a ton of unnecessary inductions happening.... am I crazy?

  • I don't really know.  I just know mine was necessary as I was going into pre-e.

  • I agree with you 100%. I'm high risk (clotting disorder) and recently switched dr's because my previous dr was dead set on inducing me. At my very first appointment he said "Well, you'll have this baby on January 7th." That would be a week before my EDD and at the time I was 5 weeks pregnant. Upon switching I found that there was no medical reason that I would HAVE to be induced, it just made it a lot easier on the dr. I think a lot of dr's push inductions for their own convenience and many women agree for the same reasoning. IMO it happens too often for no good reason (not saying there isn't a good reason).

Perfect example of a warranted induction.

  • It does kind of seem that way, but maybe not everyone has spoken up as to why they need one.  I have one scheduled for this Thursday if LO doesn't come before then.  At that point, I'll be 10 days past my due date.  That's probably not a medically necessary reason--maybe it's more me being impatient.  I'm still hoping I'll go into labor before then, though.

  • I agree with you. I think there are a lot of December inductions - I assume some are because of holiday plans. I am being induced on December 15th and having the baby on December 16th - around a week before my EDD. For DD1, I was induced at 39 weeks because of protein issues. My doctor has mentioned similar reasoning for DD2, but I am sure the holidays play a part in his decision as well.

That didn't even occur to me.

Maybe my doctor is doing the same thing, but on the opposite side of my due date.... Since I'm due on Dec 29th, and he "won't induce until 42 weeks", perhaps he's protecting his new years eve plans, lol.

  • My induction with my daughter was not medically necessary. My OB will induce anytime after 39 week (or, in my case, 38w6d) if you have a good Bishop's score. The longest he will let you go is 41w4d.

That being said, I will not be electively induced this time and regret doing it last time (even though it turned out just fine).

  • I'm with ya.

There certainly are plenty of really good reasons to induce.

There are also plenty of really good reasons NOT to induce.

I won't be talking about induction until I reach 42 weeks.

  • It seems like there are a lot, but I figure it's their birth and not mine. If they decide with their doctor that induction is the way to go then it's not my business what the reasons are.

Maybe that's my UO - the only birth plan that matters to me is my own and I think that's how it should be.

This has been my experience too... we had to change OBs around 26 weeks, and I had docs talking induction before they'd so much as heard the heartbeat or looked at my medical records.   Had one doc "fire" me as a patient since I refused to consent to induction that day.

But then... if I go too far past my due date, I could screw up their Valentine's day plans.  And just because they chose an extremely high-paying, but demanding job with very unpredictable hours, is no reason for my baby to potentially interrupt their date night!  Stick out tongue

  • I have to agree. I don't think anyone should be induced because they have holiday plans. Yes everything can go right but then again everything can go wrong. I just wouldn't want to risk it, if I had the choice. I have to have a c-section around 37-38 weeks because of my many placenta problems.
