Giving LO water?

Do you give your LO water?

If so, when did you start and how much do you give them?

  • My pedi actually advised me to give LO water from a bottle to break him of his 3:00 in the morning bottle. She said he more than likely won't take it....

  • My ped said no water until he is 6 months and eating solids, something about too much water can thin out blood or affect blood sugar levels or something. BM and formula have all the hydration needed.

  • My pedi said to not do it until closer to 6 months.  Because the formula is mostly water, its not going to do anything other than fill his belly up.

  • Thanks all, that's what I thought too.  My aunt asked me the other day how much water LO was drinking now... and I said I wasn't giving her water.  Her concerned look got me to thinking maybe I should be, but instincts said that she was getting what she needed from her formula.
  • Our pedi told us to give LO one ounce of water if he has gone more than 2 days without pooping. It works every time.
  • Our pedi recommended we start giving DS 1-2oz of water a day, not because of hydration, but because the fluoride in non-spring water is good for their teeth. DS is EBF so he doesn't get water any other way. If you're FF I would think they get enough water through that.

  • Our son has had alot of congestion due to drool/teething.  Our pedi recommended a small amount in the mornings to clear up congestion.  She did not recommend giving it beyond that reason.
