why are french fries mentioned..

..as a potential table food at 7 months when giving examples of foods that are soft enough to eat without teeth?  i mean, i get that this is not a lie - fries would be plenty easy to gum.  but..  should they really be encouraging fast foods for infants???  am i just over-reacting to my appt still? do people really give fries to babies?

explanation - our pedi gives a sheet at each visit giving age appropriate info re: development/feeding/guidance (don't even get me started on that last one and the demand that i put my baby to bed awake without a paci - yeah no thanks).

under feeding it says 'teeth are not necessary to begin most table foods such as cheerios, crackers, and french fries'

Re: why are french fries mentioned..

  • I wouldn't give a baby fast food fries, but DD did occasionally get homemade baked fries with a little rosemary and olive oil. Sweet potato fries are still a favorite!

  • I am exceedingly proud to say that B never tasted a white potato in any form until she was over a year old.  They offer almost nothing nutritionally, especially if the skin isn't being eaten, and if it's for a child under a year old, the skins are surely removed.  So that was my long way of saying, NO!  You are not overreacting.

What about baked sweet potato fries?  I think that is a great alternative!

  • While I also never gave my LO a fast food french fry before the age of one I did interpret this as an OK to let him have baked sweet potato fries :) I guess it's all in how the parent interprets it.

  • Maybe they were thinking homemade?  I could see giving some baked sweet potato 'fries'.

  • i forgot about baked sweet potato fries (they aren't really 'fries' in my brain i think lol) or even baked white potato fries.  i just got this horrible image of 7 month old babies with a small fries from mcdonalds or whatever when i read that haha..  like the green light for initiating kids into the true american lifestyle.. lol..

  • I bake homemade fries and DS loves them. When we go out to eat at restaurants (rare occurrence) we give DS a couple fries to keep him occupied. We wipe as much salt off as we can though.

  • a potato or sweet potato in fry form baked at home seems fine to me. You're essentially making baked fries out of all the root vegetables you try with her.

And this why it is so important for parents to have standards!  I'd so judge if I saw a 7 mo old w/ McDonald's fries.  Wendy's - that might be another story...  (so j/k).

  • I seriously doubt the author of that sheet had anything homemade in mind, and I have seen many a 6 month old riding in a cart eating McD fries and drink apple juice or kool aid out of a bottle.... I must admit that I say a prayer that my children will not end up in the same kindergarten class with these kids....
  • I give DS large baked sweet potato fries. But I can total see people giving their kids McDonalds french fries or something equally atrocious.
