Photo Ladies - Question

This has happened to me twice. The first time I thought it was a fluke, but now I'm convinced there has to be something to it.

I have a Nikon D40 at work. I plug it into my computer to get the pictures off. If I forget about it and leave it on my computer (for like ~1 hour), it completely kills the battery.

And I mean, kills it. As in, it will not charge. It will not function. Battery permanently dead.

The first time, it happened with the stock camera battery. This time, it happened with my back-up battery.

WTF? Has anyone had this happen to them? I know I'm dumb to leave it hooked up to my computer for an hour, but I'm at work and get super distracted.

  • No clue! That's nuts! Do you have an SD slot that you could use instead of using the USB cable to upload pics? If not, it might be worth it to pick up an SD reader (just plugs into the USB port) to avoid killing batteries! I'm positive the reader would be less expensive than buying battery after battery.

  • What Jacquie said.  I'm super paranoid about plugging my camera into my wacky computers, so I always use an SD reader.
  • We have an SD reader in our computer, so I have never had to plug it in retrieve the photos.  Weird that it would drain the battery, especially since mine seems to have a really long charge.
