Trying to Get Pregnant

Just starting ... but was VERY irregular pre-BCP

I'm a newbie and very much looking forward to talking with you all -- just looking through the past couple days, it looks like there's a lot of awesome women out there. :o)

Anyways, my biggest concern right now is that before going on BCP 2.5 years ago, I was extremely irregular -- basically anovulatory. When I've been on BCP, I am very regular. I'm assuming my best chances for TTC are going to be in the next cycle or two -- hoping my body can still stay fairly regular without BCPs. Would you all agree with that?

  • BCP force you into a "regular cycle." How do you know you were anovulatory before?

Your best bet would be to chart to see if you are o'ing. See the newbie post at the top of the board.

  • I can't really tell you. My periods were for the most part regular when I wasn't on the pill.
I was on Yaz for a year, stayed regular.
I was on Loestrin 24 FE since May and only had 3-4 periods that lasted around 4 days and were fairly light, and then occasional spotting once a month if any.

I got off the pill (it will be 4 weeks on wednesday) and have not had any bleeding what so ever (didn't even bleed at the end of my pill pack).

Everyone is different tho! Good luck, and welcome to TTC!

  • When you are just coming off of BCP, you can expect that your cycles may be irregular until things straighten out. So I wouldn't say that your best chances of conception are in the months after you come off of BCP, though of course... not impossible.. my friend was pregnant 3 months off of bcp... but generally, the first cycles of BCP can be screwy for up to a year.

If you weren't regular before, then it is quite possible that you might come back to irregular and annovulatory cycles, but I don't want to scare you, so I would just cross that bridge if you get to it.

  • Now that I think about it, prior to birth control pills, my periods were crazy (pretty much constant bleeding). The pill sort of "re-set" me and my cycles. My first one off of the pill was really long but they've been pretty normal since then.  Many women on the boards experience long cycles when first off the pill, but their bodies even out after a while. Good luck to you!
  • Pre- BCPs, I used to have the.worst.cramps ever ! Not only that, I used to go through a super tampon every 3 hours. Also, it would get so bad that I would either end up vomiting &/or pass out every CD1. I would have AF for a good 6-7 days.

Now? I get AF for 4-5 days max and it's not nearly as painful or heavy as before.

Thanks for this.  I am going through the same thing now and this is reassuring.

  • Of course you were regular on BCPs. That's their purpose - regulation with anovulation. How do you know you didn't ovulate before? Did you chart? You've got a 20% shot in any given ovulatory cycle, whether it's the first off BCPs or the 21st. I had a 29 day cycle my first off BCP, but I'm not even certain I ovulated. Since then, my cycles have been anywhere from 30 to 41 days, but I'm ovulating. There's no way to know what your body is going to do. I'd recommend OPKs to help find your surge, but keep in mind they don't indicate ovulation actually occured.

  • I just ended Loestrin 24 FE and had very light periods, too. I guess it will be interesting to see if I have any bleeding at the end of this cycle or not. At least I know it may be normal, instead of I may be pg ... guess I better go buy my first HPT! :o)

  • I'm pretty much in the same boat. My periods were always very irregular and crazy before, was only on BCP for 10 months and just stopped about 2 weeks ago. We aren't quite ready to TTC yet, so I have some time to see how things go with my periods now and figure it out.

    Good luck to you!
