14 month olds...any problems with "demanding" things?

DH dropped him off at daycare the other day, and he started saying "nah nah nah nah nah" over & over again loudly, and kind of stomping his feet.

DH asked the teacher if he does that very often, & she said, "well, yes, kind of. we're trying to teach him 'please,'" and she made the sign for it.

For the most part at home, E doesn't pitch a fit...if he does, I calmly tell him we're not going to do that, and try to redirect (most times he's just hungry/sleepy).

I definitely don't want E to be THAT kid that pitches a fit to get his way...what is the best way, or the most successful way you've found, to deter this behavior?

Ever since the teacher mentioned saying please, I've been trying to do that just as much as I do "thank you," but what else?

Re: 14 month olds...any problems with "demanding" things?

  • E used to "demand" things, and still does to a point. She demands to get on the couch with us, sit in a big chair, get milk, etc. We just taught her to say, "Up Please", "Milk Please" etc. Please was one of the signs we taught from the beginning and she eventually picked it up. Just keep trying, he will get it soon. Now that she is almost 2, we will not give her something until she says/signs please. We usually have to tell her, "Say please" or "can you say please?" or even say, "What do you say? Please?" etc.
