If you had BH contractions...

did they hurt like real contractions?

I had 1 fairly painful one last night at dinner and just had another one a few minutes ago.  Dr. Google tells me that BH don't hurt (that they feel "uncomfortable") but these were painful enough to stop my conversation and make me focus on that feeling.  Weird, no?  I feel odd calling the doctor and saying that I had to 2 contractions 20 hours apart and I happen to know that he is in surgery right now so I wouldn't see him if I went in anyway.

Re: If you had BH contractions...

  • When I started showing signs of labor (early 24th week) I had about 1-2 BH (well I thought they were, since I barely felt them and I wasn't even sure that's what it was) that day and never had any regularity.  They did not hurt.  In the hospital, they kept saying contractions were monitoring, but I couldn't feel them until they got really painful the last 2 days.

    I'd probably call.

  • I had them so often I was diagnosed with an irritable uterus.  I was placed on meds and restricted activity.  Some of them were painful enough to stop me in my tracks, but the majority were just annoying and uncomfortable.

I was told to call if I had more than 6 in an hour that did not go away after drinking a glass of water (dehydration can be a cause) or relaxing.  I'd probably call and at least speak to the nurse if they are painful for you.

That's what they said mine was when I was admitted to the hospital :-) (noting I had other issues going on, but I'd still call!)

This defines me exactly, although I wasn't given meds for them.  I started having painful contractions (one or two a day) sometime around 32-33 weeks and they continued to get more frequent until around 36 weeks. I would have bouts of contractions 3-5 minutes apart for an hour and they'd go away.  I would definitely call.  If nothing else, they'll just tell you to call them if you have 6 in an hour to call them or go in for monitoring.

Also - FWIW, I think these early contractions are what helped my early progression so much.  At 36 weeks, I was 2 cm and 50% effaced.  I know it's not the same for everyone, but maybe it will be for you.

    Hope all goes well.

  • My BH never hurt that bad. My real contractions were doozies.

Don't get me wrong - my BH were very noticeable,  but I don't think I would have ever used the word "pain" to describe them. At least, not in retrospect knowing what labor contractions feel like.

Still, though, I'd call. What's the worst that can happen?

  • I had one doozie of a painful BH contrax at 22 weeks and it turns out that I had a UTI.

Just one, I had a checkup the next day and mentioned it although I hadn't had any since, and was feeling fine.

Yep.  UTI.  I totally had no other signs.

GOOD LUCK!  I hope you call, it will make us feel better.  Surprise

  • I called.  Nurse said that if I had them more regularly or they don't stop by drinking some water and laying down that it might be an issue but based on how I described it, they weren't worried.  Yay!
  • Yay for good news! I hope they stop!
  • I've had one where it was painful, but the rest have just been uncomfortable. I call, surprisingly not all the time lol, when they didn't go away with resting and drinking a lot of water.
