Traditions: When will you be opening gifts with LO?

Christmas eve? Christmas morning? Both?

I think we will open maybe one on Christmas eve and the rest on Christmas morning before we go to my parents house. We don't do Xmas with the ILs til the 26th, so it works out nicely. I think we will have this be our tradition every year.

  • The gifts from us, they open on Christmas eve. Santa gifts they open Christmas morning.

  • We have a Christmas party on Christmas Eve starting at about 3pm and then a party on Christmas day (all day) starting at 10 am. So I think we've decided to do our little family present opening on Christmas Eve morning. We'll make a special breakfast and then open presents.

  • We'll be doing the same.  It's been a tradition in my family of opening up one gift on Xmas Eve (usually something boring that we would wear to church that night like a pair of tights LOL)  so I plan to continue it with DD.  Then we'll open the rest on Christmas morning with my parents, siblings, and nephews.

  • hmmm, good question.  I think we will probably just start doing all of ours on Christmas morning because we have my family's on Christmas Eve at 4 and then DH family (that is in town) at about 7 the same night, so I doubt we will be staying up all night long to open the presents we got each other!  Luckily we don't have to travel at Christmas, so we can stay home all day on Christmas Day if we want and hang out...
  • Santa comes on Christmas Eve so we will be opening them on Christmas day - most likely morning - unless she sleeps in, then we will open them Christmas evening as we go to My Mom's house for Christmas Brunch and presents - we all go in our jammies!!

Christmas eve we go to my Dad's for lunch and DH's parents for late dinner

  • My husband & I have exchanged one sentimental gift on Christmas Eve right before bedtime since our dating days.  Like...one year I got him his Bible, he got me an ornament to remember our first baby, or a photo collage or piece of jewelry that means something to the two of us.

I don't know if we'll do that with Harrison or just let him open all of his gifts Christmas morning.

  • This is causing issues with my DH & ILs. We want to do all gift opening on Christmas morning or later. ILs want to do them Christmas Eve. They all plan to come over Christmas morning so we don't see why we need to open presents the night before.
  • We never got to open gifts on x-ams eve, because we never had to go anywhere, but with the LO's we now go visit the inlaws on x-mas eve so they will open their gifts then and ours and Santas gifts on x-mas morning. We have a tradition that Santa always leaves a gift at the foot of our bed and it's new PJ's to wear all day, we will definitly be continuing that one!!
  • This is a tough one in our house - both DH and I came from families with tons of traditions around gift opening.  Our family was a Christmas Eve family, while his was Christmas morning.

Added onto that is the fact that DH works shift work - so his schedule around Christmas may look different every year.  We want to create some set traditions (like one gift - jammies - before bed on Christmas Eve and stockings Christmas morning) but I think that from there it will change depending on the year ... based on when DH is home.

  • We travel out of state to Michigan every year for Christmas with our families.  That being said, we are doing our little family Christmas the weekend before we leave... so that will be on December 19 this year... when DS will open his gifts from us.

  • I don't know.  My family always ended up opening all our presents when we got home from midnight mass, and I hated it.  Once I was in middle school and all I got were clothes, there was nothing for me to do all day Christmas day except look at my clothes, while my brother had video games to play with.  It made for a loooong day.  I'm thinking this year the adults can exchange on Christmas eve and DS can open everything in the morning.
  • We will have our own family Christmas on Sunday this year since we'll be out of town for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  I want to be home when we all open our presents (DH, me and DS).  I can't wait!

  • We open all gifts on Christmas morning, but on Christmas Eve we always go to my Uncle's and do our secret santa exchange and the kids get presents from the uncles and aunts. I told both of our families when DD was born that we would be staying home on Christmas, but that anyone was welcome to come over. Last yr my parents & brother & uncle and aunt came for brunch and DH's family came for dinner. MIL asked if we're having Christmas again this yr so she must not get the point. It irritates me. I don't want my kids to have to be in the car all day on Christmas, I want them to hang out in their pjs and play with toys and watch Christmas movies.

  • My parents are visiting a few days before Christmas so we will have Jack open their gift then.  He gets to open his PJs on Christmas Eve, and then everything else is Christmas morning.  It will just be the 3 of us.  My ILs live out of state.
  • We do one gift on Christmas Eve (which will always be Pajamas for all three of us, and a matchbox car for DS). Then on Christmas morning we have spiked specialty coffee (chocolate milk for DS) and open our gifts (stockings first). Then we have a big breakfast (cheese omlettes, cinnamon rolls, bacon, hash browns) and watch Christmas movies until it's time to go to our big family dinner with all my relatives (DH family is far away).
