Cough Drops Safe?

I feel like this is a really stupid question, but does anyone know if it is safe to use cough drops during pregnancy?  I googled and got mixed information.  My doctor gave me a list of safe OTC meds, but cough drops weren't on the list.  Not sure if that's b/c they don't consider them a medication since there are no active ingredients or if they aren't safe.  I have a call in to the OB, but I'm dying here at work and thought you all might know.  TIA!

Re: Cough Drops Safe?

  • I got a list too, and for cough/cold my list states "Robitussin (cough) or Robitussin DM (Non-Productive cough) Sucrets and Vicks Throat Lozenges."

I work at a Wal-mart and talked to the pharmacist and he referred me to Luden's cough drops. Sweeter than Halls. (But they're now starting to make me gag, I have to change it).

Hope you find what you're looking for, and feel better soon!

  • I love Luden's....but there's nothing like menthol in there to actually "soothe" your throat. I think it's more about producing enough saliva to moisten your throat so it doesn't hurt. Someone else mentioned those fruity Hall's Breezers the other day.
  • yes cough drops are fine Smile I always got the halls breezers !

  • Just heard back from the OB's Office so I thought I would share their reply.  My OB says cough drops of any kind/brand are safe.

I am blissfully enjoying my Halls Ice Blue cough drop as I type.

  • Thanks for the information, I didn't  think I would be able to sleep tonite without taking some kind of cough drop and all I have is Halls
